Forums - Sales - The gap appears to be growing between 360 and PS3.

Recent Edge magazine has a great article on the history of Playstation. The article end with a remark that PS1 (and 2) were so successful because Crazy Kat was always make sure that they are first and foremost a game machine and not a multimedia machine. PSone was launch using Sony Music deivision and which at first want to sell it as multi-media device (CD and then DVD for PS2). It is remarkable that for PS3, that's exactly what Sony did and try to sell PS3 as multimedia hub instead of an awesome game machine.

It's a fascinating article and you can clearly see where they went wrong. I mean for PS1 they got on the stage and announce $299.00 (which was so cheap compare to 3DO and Saturn) but this gen they got on the stage and announce $599!!

And the article conveniently forgets that it was Krazy Ken that designed and marketed the ps3 too. He is not known for listening to his bosses either so I doubt he was coerced to do this.

I do think the PS brand won't be the same without him though and I don't think he would have dumbed the ps3 to the point of taking out BC which he always ranted about if he was still in charge.

The gap will be around 10 million in favour of XBox 360 over the PS3 by end of 2009 and continue to rise.

@Pristine

I don't think the fact that Kaz design the PS3 change anything about Edge article. If you recall he resigned shortly after the launch of PS3. May be he was push out or may be he just simply didn't like where Sony was taking Playstation brand. Regardless of this, it clearly show the difference mindset between the launch of PS1 and PS3.

Sony clearly was banking on the brand of Playstation to overcome the less than stellar line-up at launch and the $599 price point. They forgot how fickle us video game consumers are. Sony was dethroned by Nintendo just as quickly as they dominated Nintendo during N64.

He was pushed out for refusing to lshow accountability to his bosses and spending too much money on R&D to produce an overpowered system which sony had to take an even further heavy loss in order to sell.

Granted, he probably wasn't the only one behind the blu-ray addition which is mostly blamed for jacking up the price but he had to take the responsibility because he ultimately decided what was included in the ps3. He still one of the greatest icons to touch gaming but he got blinded on the path to outdo M$ in tech. Perhaps it was the engineer in him that totally disregarded whatever fraction of a businessman he had in himself and he took it personally when he realized that the xbox was vastly more powerful than the ps2 last gen.

@Pristine

Oh, I am not arguing at all that Kaz is an awesome hardware designer and truly deserve his place in video games history. Actually reading that article give me a huge appreciation for what he have bring to the industry, especially ultimately bringing down Nintendo.

All I am saying is, the article clearly shows the change in direction of PS3 from its predecessors. May be Kaz lost his perspective as you said, in the search to outdo Microsoft that we will never know (unless someday he wrote a tell all book). Reading article about Shippy (IBM chip designer) and it was clear that Kaz want PS3 to be the ultimate in as far as technology. Cell is definitely powerful but in the end PS3 is and should have been design as gaming machine first and marketed as such.

The gap will be big enough for MS and its loyal soldiers to do their happy dance. no more than that when the PS4 and Xbox 720 start.

PS4 will have a big 1st/2nd party slate. Xbox 720 is relying on 3rd parties from the looks of it.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

im not going to sat game over yet considering if this economy continues the way it is we might not see the next generation till 2014.

true, but that same economy is likely to keep the PS3 behind ever longer because the PS3 today, nearly 2.5 years after its launch, is still the same price the 360 was when it launched almost 3.5 years ago.

Now I'm not saying it's impossible that the PS3 could catch the 360 because if there's anything this gen has taught us, it's to expect the impossible to happen (Gamespot's April Fools joke anyone?), but at best it's a very, very remote possibility. And I'm saying this even though I think the PS3 is the best 7th gen console.

idk, if Sony can cut the price before this holiday and then next they have a good chance.

They WILL cut this year, of course.

The problem is not of a question of wether, but rather of when. Right now they are down YoY (and have been for quite some time) which is bad, but a pricecut this earlier is a wasted opportunity. We are through the weaker months of the year and the recession is still looming over consumer spending.

Since their YoY is just at -6%, if I were to wager I'd bet SCE will coast it for as long as they can at the current pricepoint.

Remember when the PS2 would get exclusive titles like Final Fantasy and Grand Theft Auto? Well that had a lot to do with PS2's success and Sony would still be getting those licenses if they weren't dead broke from their bomb of a console. Sony games aren't that great anyway, they only get big sales from bundles.

OMG Really!

I never realized this amazing phenomenon!

BTW guys

is the gap between wii n Ps360 increasing too?

Well they do a great job selling the Wii. Too bad that can't be said for games other than Mario.

Wii Fit and Wii Play say hello.  On the DS, Brain Training/Brain Age, and Advance Wars say hello also.
