Forums - Sales - The gap appears to be growing between 360 and PS3.

and lol people dont learn their lessons do they? saying the ps3 cant catch up and stuff. whatever most people think here the opposite usually happen! you know what i said 4 years ago there is NO WAY the wii would even outsell the ps3 even 1 week and now look whats happening. until the 360 is 20 million ahead, the battle is still on.

Me saying the PS3 can't beat the 360 isn't just a wld guess or because I think the games will make the difference, it's just looking at the numbers.

If the PS3 dropped price tomorrow and suddenly became such a selling machine that it outsold the 360 by 100k per month, it would take more than 6 1/2 years for the PS3 to just catch up to the 360.

In order to just catch up to 360 in a reasonable amount of time, say two years, the PS3 would have to OUTSELL (not just sell) the 360 more than 350k per month for two straight years.

So yeah...

big ps3 price cuts probably coming within the next month or two.

I though the price cut rumor turned out to be the new Motorstorm/Resistance bundle?

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Isn't the lesson that you tend to be wrong? So  if you think the PS3 can make a comeback, it probably won't?

Ignore post

I am sorry, but some needs to use his brain and think about perentages and not about actual numbers.

Since that time, Sony has gained 1.2% more of market share, Microsoft has lost around 7% of their market share.

In addtion, there was about 16% more market share between Sony and Microsoft and now it dropped to around 8%.

So here you go, speaking of gap analysis.

So then you're saying the PS3 can outself the 360 by 350k per month for the next two years straight or 100k per month for the next six years straight?

Oh god, deja vu right here =)

I don't think it will happen, but you have to remember how high the sales difference becomes during the holiday season, and how PS3 has the oppurtinuty to see steady sales in Japan.  A constant 20k - 30k lead from that region every week would be a big help.

And 100k or even 350k per month seems like a lot, but 360 was just outselling the PS3 50k a week around a month ago. If PS3 and 360 really do a reversal after a price cut, this would mean 200k a month during the slow months.

There really isn't much Sony can do to not come in last. That's not saying the PS3 is a failure by any means because it isn't, I'm just saying that gap can't close quick enough to overtake the 360 by the time it matters.

Actually I would consider the PS3 a failure in regards to what success it could have had. If Sony had the chance to redo everything the launch price would have been $300, the hardware would be cheaper to produce, and they would have dominated the market again.

Its safe to say Sony will make a more economical console when the PS4 rolls around.

Recent Edge magazine has a great article on the history of Playstation. The article end with a remark that PS1 (and 2) were so successful because Crazy Kat was always make sure that they are first and foremost a game machine and not a multimedia machine. PSone was launch using Sony Music deivision and which at first want to sell it as multi-media device (CD and then DVD for PS2). It is remarkable that for PS3, that's exactly what Sony did and try to sell PS3 as multimedia hub instead of an awesome game machine.

It's a fascinating article and you can clearly see where they went wrong. I mean for PS1 they got on the stage and announce $299.00 (which was so cheap compare to 3DO and Saturn) but this gen they got on the stage and announce $599!!

oh cmon the gaps not too bad. the increase isn't much of a worry atm. but it might be if as the OP said, sony dont start doing some stuff to get back in the game
