I think I would probably put the God of War franchise over the MGS franchise in terms of storytelling - not in terms of plot, mind you. Just that the writers of God of War know their own material, know how to parse it down, and don't have their heads up their own collective ass.

GOW is good

but its story is quite basic....

its the epicness of the story & the way its narrated that GOW excels in....ofcourse thats an important part of the story process

That is exactly what I mean, Darth. Tey take a very basic story, don't bog it down, and use it solely as a means to get you into more situations in which you might kick ass.

Storytelling done right, for what it is.

I would apply the same logic to Gears of War, Halo, or almost any other mindless action game that doesn't stoop to Haze-esque levels of crapitude.

I'll take a well-polished yet simple story in an action game over the pile of tripe Kojima writes. I like the MGS games (actually playing them, that is) but have a hard time choking down so much of that writing... Just terrible. Absolutely terrible.

I would have made a Gears comparison (I think Gears 2 had the best in-game storytelling of last year) but I didn't want this to turn into a 360 vs. PS3 debate.

Xenogears, Parasite Eve saga, FFVIII, Xenosaga, Tales of the Abyss and others come to mind that are equal to or even better than the winners storywise

Both Gears of War and God of War are perfect examples of staying within your demographic and still doing a good job with it, platforms be damned. They're the summer blockbuster movie... Well done ones at that. The Dark Knights of gaming, if you will. When compared to more intelligent fare across multiple genres, they pale in comparison. But they do what they do and they do it well.
