Metal Gear Solid 4 was a very good game, I love the series in general. I would play each game again if I had them all.

In terms of best storyline though, I would say no way.

I agree with Kyliedog here, they really f**ked up Vamp.

Fact remains.....no other MGS game got emotions out of me in the way the microwave chamber scene, Act 3 final scene n so on got!

MGS3 ending comes close

I believe you. I thought MGS4 storyline was very well done, one of my favorites this gen. I just didn't like how things ended up with Vamp. I really liked him.

The microwave chamber was bad-ass, but my poor thumb.

Also: no, not the best story ever. Not even the best story on its own system, much less this gen, much less ever.

Looks like this article was posted 16 days early. Silent Hill 2 has a better story than these two.

I enjoyed the microwave chamber.

As for the 2nd sentence, I never said it was the best this gen, just one of my favorites.

Edit - 2nd sentenced was aimed at the OP I see. My bad.

MGS4 isn't even close to being the best story on the PlayStation platforms.
Actually, it's not even the best in the Metal Gear Solid series (That would go to MGS or MGS3).

But meh, seems that's the popular opinion these days. If Kojima would hire a great writing staff and drop the pen himself, I think we'd see something leagues above his current achievements.

*scratches head*

Leagues above the impossible to top?

Kojima is a horrendous writer. While he has managed to craft some fun plotlines, and is a brilliant cinematographer throughout his cutscenes, his complete lack of brevity and creativity in his writing is a glaring fault.
Not to mention the ending to MGS4 was cheesy and unnecessary beyond belief; a very disappointing end to an otherwise great series of games in my opinion.

Kojima is a 3rd rate writer, and MGS series proves just that. in every MGS I've played, there were ALOT of errors, including ones that shouldn't ever be made by any writer.

I can't agree with MGS4 being #1 because to me it's not even remotely close to the quality of the original MGS. Snake is barely even a character in MGS4 and everything we have to relate to him by must come exclusively from the previous two games featuring him because he's nothing more than a brooding, quiet old man in the final entry. He doesn't joke, he barely speaks, and he merely gives a listening ear as everyone else explains to him textbook style exactly how they're going to tie up the numerous loose ends. MGS4 feels like that last half hour of extended endings in the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King that just would never end. All of the best elements come from the parts where people finally shut up and let the emotions ride high. Snake in the microwave was fantastic, the final battle was also. What wasn't was watching Naomi simultaneously die and explain what's going on.

Overall it was a fantastic game, but just cannot handle being anything other than a shadow of the original. Look at the bosses. They are actual rehashes of bosses from MGS, except with no personality this time. Also the most popular act is usually Act 4 and that's no surprise why that is.

ICO and Shadow of the Colossus deserve to be up there.

Truth.

Also, I completely agree with your assesment.
Thanks for taking the effort where I wouldn't .

I like FF7, but second best story??, wheres MGS2??

 wait, what?

If we're limiting this to Playstation games (and I'll exclude PC ports while I'm at it), anyone who rates either FF7 or MGS4's storyline above a game such as SotC keeps a kick in the teeth and then they need to read a few books to get a grasp on what good storytelling involves.

Less is more. Kojima will never understand that when it comes to writing. The man has some great ideas (some lousy ones, too) and some of his scenes are breathtaking but he manages to bog everything down with repetitive dialogue, overly complex narrative, and downright cheesy moments.

FF7 just sucked, period. At one point, I just kept battling the weapons to watch my annoying characters die over and over again. The best part was that by doing this, I was spared the agony of listening/watching any of them mope around and cry over whatever manufactured problem they were suffering through at the time.
