mr Squill I can name a dozen games that never got the sales they deserved and other games which were a bag of poop that done far better.
Quality games which didn't do well:
1. Beyond good and evil
2. Ico
3. Valkyri chronicles
4. Okami
5. Killer 7
6. XIII
7. Heavenly Sword
8. Shenmue
9. Shenmue2
10. Folklore
11. Endgame ( ps3 voice activated rts thingy)
12. Resistance 2 ( this is imo, since the game is friggin awesome and the sales should be way better!)
Games that lack quality but sold well
1. FIFA street series
2. Many need for speeds
3. Shovelware such as wii music and eyeplay
4. The 1st 50cent game
5. Weird sonic game where you control 3 players
6. Halo 3 ( I think it ripped off those who are halo fans by publishing a game that felt more like a halo 2.5)
Sales do not equate quality, never will and never have... Not even to some degree! Sales indicate what consumers are willing to pay for: things they recognize, things they are familiar with, things that are marketed well, things which look fun from the box art etc
Not everyone who owns a console and I would say probably less then 50% of console owners will not read reviews or magazines or info on websites. We are a different breed to them, we are the niche and they are the mainstream. For us, word of mouth will work, for them it won't. They follow the masses and the general wordly rules. We are like the Jedi they are like the common rebel alliance soldier. Although we maybe wiser, they still make up the numbers and are more likely to support stupidity being unwise.
Oh by the way, I left out the biggest pile of crap which sold extremely well- GTA4!
