Forums - Gaming - Which Console Will Last Longest This Gen?

Straight forward question concerning the 3 present consoles really.

Will they all be here in 5 years or will there be casualtys.

I personally think the last man standing will be 360 but that is just an opinion.

I think that because it seems to be the new ps2.

Wii I dont know about as it has a massive base at present so it only has to build on that.

PS3 I think needs a pricecut to get back into the game and start eating into the 360 lead.

Just my thoughts and nothing scientific here so other opinions would be apprecited.

The Wii is the new PS2, not the 360. So I think Nintendo will milk this cow till the very last drop.

PS3, almost for certain. You could argue that another generation is pointless until machines capable of rendering 1080p games at 60fps easily are also cheap to manufacture... that could be a long while.

Even though PC games are a tad better than the current HD consoles can provide... given the huge acceptance of the Wii, which is still a SD platform, I think that the HD consoles of this gen could stick around for a long while, without issue.

It would border on foolish for MS and Sony to release something more expensive to manufacture than the PS3 or 360, until those consoles can be manufactured for like... $100 - $150 USD themselves. That's a long way off.

MS isn't going to "up the bar" on Sony by releasing a $500 console that does 1080p games nicely, when 720p is perfectly fine by most users -- or 480p, if you take the Wii as an indicator. MS and Sony will raise the bar when said console costs about $300, only, and the 360 and PS3 are near the price of the current PS2.

Nintendo is the only one who has room to grow in the short term.  Nintendo will be first to release a new console, not last, because they can afford to -- and they aren't gonna do that until the Wii is thoroughly milked.

1. Whichever one gets most sales.
2. Whichever one gets most third party support.

Judging by those two points I would say the Wii.

The Triple due to it being future-proof.

FUTURE.

PROOF.

i think wii will be the last one standing. They have been and are making alot of money and will not create something that is less profitable (IE a new console) until they believe their audience is moving on

Long Live SHIO!

All of them will last until they start selling less than 25,000 for multiple months in a row I would say. Look at PS2, still selling, still around. Xbox & Gamecube went under a few thousand a week and were killed off. I predict Wii will last until 2013-2014, 360 until 2012-2013, and PS3 until 2011-2012.

PREDICTIONS:
(Predicted on 5/31/11) END of 2011 Sales - Xbox 360 = 62M;  PS3 = 59M;  Wii = 97M

The genious of the Wii is that it is 100% BC. A new Wii could be the same -- there's lots of room for growth. A Wii HD won't kill off customers, it will give them the option to upgrade, just like the Wii did for the GC.

Nintendo could write a spec allowing devs to simply use allocate more texture space, etc. for games that want to work on both, but be nicer looking on the Wii HD. PC games have done that for eons.

Its like having a performance options panel where your console gets to decide how much to turn up the sliders.  Since there would only be two settings, and it would be auto-set, not user tunable, this should be cake for devs to handle.  Wii game == normal.  You have a Wii HD?  You get shadows, higher res textures, pixel shaders.  Voila -- Wii for all.

Wii will be 1st, not last, because it is so succesful.  Wii HD will not displace the Wii -- it will augment it.  And it'll come in a zillion colors!

PS3

Sony will keep it on sale as long as possible to try and recover losses made on the system. They also need to keel it out the longest to get it to a cheap price so that they can launch their PS4

The market leader.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.
