Forums - Nintendo - Wii in 2009 vs Wii in 2008, a tribute to Crazzyman.

@Kenology: I'm very calmed, I'm just summarizing the situation. No one told me to calm down when the Wii was up YoY...

It sucks, I know, but the Wii is going down, and what I say is what's actually happening or what's in the realm of possibilities. I'm not saying Wii is doomed or that it will be outsold by any console this year, I'm posting facts and numbers and making some projections and predictions based on what we have available. Nintendo just won't be near the projections, so I'm guessing they will lower them to 20 million~ when this quarter ends.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

I understand what you're doing... but all I'm saying is, I don't think the situation is unsalvagable just yet.  Iwata didn't lower projections last quarter for a reason - and I have a lot of faith in Iwata.  I dunno what's cookin' over at Kyoto, but Ninty has something up its sleeve...

As weeks go by and the gap increases YoY by 120k - 150k each week things will get tougher and tougher. The fact that they are not reacting at all is worrying. Each week that goes by with a 150k difference, means that another week in the future will have to be 150k bigger. And man, weekly sales last year were gigantic, so I honestly don't see how the Wii will be able to sell much more than it did weekly last year.

I don't think it's salvageable anymore. They will just have to come out and lower their projections, unless they have a gen defining secret awaiting to be uncovered and implemented right away in the next couple of weeks. You know that as long as sales YoY gap keeps on increasing, it will be much more difficult for them to make up for. Next week it will be 4 million down FY over FY.

We ( wiifans) must admit the fact
The wii go down and down
The conduit and monster hunter fail in sales ( i talk of hardware)
if third party does do good games when sold now we can prepare for the worst

@trestres

im guessing that nintendo will base when to drop price on financials rarther than numbers sold. To me it seems profitabillity to them is a higher priority than metting projections. They will prob drop the price when they calculate that new games bought by the larger userbase will make enough profit to cancel out potential profit lost by a price cut. who knows, maybe theve already reached that point and will announce a price cut in october. to my mind bundles and new colours would be the best compromise since that would boost hardware without them loosing too much. red wii with mario bros seems the most obvious tho maybe they will do a bundle with samaurai warriors 3 in japan. seems quite unlikely tho.

as reggie pointed out last quarter although wii sales are down profits for nintendo has a company were relatively flat. unfortunatly with the way the market falls nintendos stock price will probably fall even further when they dont meet or lower projections even if they make the same amount of money this year than last year.

This week -156,803 units =(((((((

Wii is DOWN 3,167,637 units from 2008!  =(

Note: Wii is now 4 million down this FY in comparison to the last. Any official confirmation of new colors, price cuts or bundles should be coming soon to prevent the Wii from losing 150k units weekly anymore. But until then, Wii will keep on going down.

Wii is DOWN 3,238,712 units from 2008!  =(

Note: Wii is officially getting a pricecut in 2 weeks. Sales should keep on going down at least until the pricecut happens.
The console should be about 3.4 million units down YoY when the price cut comes into effect, meaning it will have to sell that amount or more to end up with a positive year.

Going into the FY though, things look more complicated, as the Wii will be about 4.2 million behind last FY, meaning that in between October and January it would need to sell 4.2 more million units than in the same period of last FY if they want to reach projections. We will have to wait and finally see how much sales can be boosted by the price cut.

Nintendo has a different release strategy this year than last year which is reflected in these YoY data. Last fiscal year it was release big titles in the first fiscal quarter and this fiscal year it's in the 3rd fiscal quarter. And you've noted the price cut during the same quarter as well (technically a few days before the start of the 3rd fiscal quarter).

It may still end slightly down calendar YoY (depending on available volumes during the holiday) but will pull even fiscal YoY.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Tres, do you think the little boost in sales Wii had this week was because WSR? There was not big game (The Beatles: RB came out the previous week, and there weren't other big games apart from WSR...) but the Wii had a good and unexpected boost...maybe there were special offers from some reatailer, but this can be the American reason, the EU one is another (i live in EU and there were not price drop rumors with special offers for that week).

What do you think?
