Seriously, is there anything a laser can't do? A team of mad scientists in Washington have concocted a system that could essentially eliminate malaria-carrying mosquitoes with lasers, and the whole thing can be built from parts sourced on eBay. The so-called mosquito laser is credited to an idea from Lowell Wood, an astrophysicist who worked with Edward Teller, the "architect of the original plan to use lasers to shield America from the rain of Soviet nuclear arms." In theory, at least, the technology could one day be used to draw a laser barrier of sorts around a village. Of course, the trick is to make the lasers powerful enough to smoke the bugs without harming humans -- any of you Earthlings up for a clinical trial or two?

Does it only shoot down the ones containing malaria? If so, how can it tell?

Maybe it has a mechanism similar to a heat seeking device or something >_> (to be honest, i  dunno)

lol for a second I thought you meant people. I'd think that the laser would just kill any mosquito it saw , I can't imagine anyone would care if they were extinct.

If they went extinct it would probably have severe consequences for insect predators, but I don't think it will be a big deal from that perspective considering the areas that anyone can afford to cover with frickin' lasers.

I kind of want to know how this works. I'm sure you dont need a strong laser to kill a mosquito however I'm wondering about the targeting system...

This should work well until the lasers rebel against us....but that's another story...^_^
