Opoona!
The difference with Vaan is that he's developed in a more subtle believable way, more like a real person then, say, Cloud, Squall, and other previous FF's hero's bullshit excuses for character growth. I personally Vaan as a main character was a good artistic effort on SE's part.
Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.
@Khuuhta and Mise:
Hell YEAH!! Venat was actualy the best character in FFXII. I have no idea why people don't normaly see this.
People always say Kefka was the only villain to have won, but in my mind that means they weren't paying as much atention to FFXII as they say.
Quem disse que a boca é tua?
Qual é, Dadinho...?
Dadinho é o caralho! Meu nome agora é Zé Pequeno!

Quite right. What I liked about the characterization in this game is that it wasn't done with a sledgehammer.

Vaan was developed fine. Given that his original motivation is just revenge for his brother, watching him grow as a person is actually very interesting - particularly in his relationship to Basch, and then to Gabranth. The way he acts as Ashe's conscience throughout the game was very nice, too. |
You know if Vaan was the main character in a tales game you would shun him to bloody hell and you know that.

@Khuutra: I'm not saying he wasn't developed. I'm saying that Zidane was a better character. That's it. Nothing more.

@g-value: If he was a main character in a Tales game he wouldn't have the advantage of his subtle characterization and the use of his perspective, so yeah, I probably wouldn't like him nearly as much!
@Johann: yeah but, I mean, that has to be qualified in some way! Else how can I argue with it? He had a reason to be there: revenge for his brother. Then his reason changed! It was pretty cool.

Maybe it's because Venat doesn't really do that much on camera, and unless you're paying attention it's not impossible to miss what it has done before and why (genderless, right?). Plus, even though it has a significant role in the story, Venat doesn't get much screentime, compared to prominent villains like Kefka or Seymour who are constantly in your face.

And your post just rambled on about Ashe and Balthier and forgot to stay on the subject of him being a worst character compared to Zidane. The problem you have with Zidane is the not the fact that he was a bad character (and I do agree with you on that), but the fact the he was in the spotlight in FFIX, and Vaan wasn't in XII. In your mind not being the main character excuses you of having a (well developed) personality, as opposed to a main character, which has to be great. Come to think of it, maybe that's why you ike Suikoden games so much. A few well developed characters and 100 shitly developed ones. |
I never said that Vaan didn't have no personality. I think he's a well developed character, not the deepest, but not bad by any means. I was just pointing why Vaan is so hated. He's a fine character, but everyone blames him because he's not a "cool main character"
Maybe if Zidane wasn't the main character and Vivi was I would have liked the game more, yeah, but who knows. But also, maybe if Kuja wasn't so horrible I would have liked it more, so no point wondering
And the last sentence, since you only played one game and you didn't even finish it (I'm not sure even if you reached the middle), I'm not gonna bother answering it

No i don't hate Vaan because he's not "cool" i hate him because he's annoying and had no part in the story at all. Its like SE made Vaan the main character just to piss us off.
