I always took Basch to be the "main" character, after Ashe.
Basch is Hella underrated too.
The villains of that game even moreso.

Exactly. The story was told from Vaan's perspective, but the story did not revolve around him.

First, he had a personality. He may not be the most complex character ever, but he had a personality. And most important, Vaan's not even the main character of the story. He's not supposed to be the deepest, that goes for Ashe and Balthier, the main characters. Vaan appeared everywhere just because the Japanese need the main guy to be a pretty boy, but there's no denying that Vaan is NOT the main character, story-wise. Look at Penelo, she's much more plain than Vaan, but since everyone knows she's secondary, nobody pays attention to her. I think everyone got confused with the previous FFs and expected Vaan to be a Cloud/Squall/Zidane/Tidus type when he was clearly never meant that way

WTF do you mean Vaan is not the main character. If you check the booklet they have him as the main character. If you check wikipedia they have him as the main character. If you ask the developers of FF12 they will tell you that Vaan is the main character. Stop making excuses for Final Fantasy 12.

He is neither the primary focus of the story nor the person whose actions most affect things. That would be Basch and Ashe, in either case.
He is not the main character. You played the game, you should know.

Yes he was a bit of a perv, and weirdly saved Kuja's life at the end, but come on! Vaan basicaly did NOTHING AT ALL. What was relevant about Vaan? His brother was killed. That's it. |
He did make Tidus seem tolerable. That has to count for something.
As for the topic, I'm going with Venat, actually. Not that he's that great, but should at least be noticed, since he did more for the people of Ivalice than the supposed good guys did.

Venat is one of my top villains of all time, incidentally!
@Zexen: I always say bad shit about Penelo, so count me out of that "not paying atention" stuff.
And your post just rambled on about Ashe and Balthier and forgot to stay on the subject of him being a worst character compared to Zidane. The problem you have with Zidane is the not the fact that he was a bad character (and I do agree with you on that), but the fact the he was in the spotlight in FFIX, and Vaan wasn't in XII. In your mind not being the main character excuses you of having a (well developed) personality, as opposed to a main character, which has to be great.
Come to think of it, maybe that's why you ike Suikoden games so much. A few well developed characters and 100 shitly developed ones.
Quem disse que a boca é tua?
Qual é, Dadinho...?
Dadinho é o caralho! Meu nome agora é Zé Pequeno!

Vaan was developed fine. Given that his original motivation is just revenge for his brother, watching him grow as a person is actually very interesting - particularly in his relationship to Basch, and then to Gabranth. The way he acts as Ashe's conscience throughout the game was very nice, too.
