Vaan was ridiculously bad. At least Zidane was there and you know.... had a personality! Yes he was a bit of a perv, and weirdly saved Kuja's life at the end, but come on! Vaan basicaly did NOTHING AT ALL. What was relevant about Vaan? His brother was killed. That's it.

First, he had a personality. He may not be the most complex character ever, but he had a personality. And most important, Vaan's not even the main character of the story. He's not supposed to be the deepest, that goes for Ashe and Balthier, the main characters. Vaan appeared everywhere just because the Japanese need the main guy to be a pretty boy, but there's no denying that Vaan is NOT the main character, story-wise. Look at Penelo, she's much more plain than Vaan, but since everyone knows she's secondary, nobody pays attention to her.

I think everyone got confused with the previous FFs and expected Vaan to be a Cloud/Squall/Zidane/Tidus type when he was clearly never meant that way

 

WTF do you mean Vaan is not the main character. If you check the booklet they have him as the main character. If you check wikipedia they have him as the main character. Stop making excuses for Final Fantasy 12.

He is neither the primary focus of the story nor the person whose actions most affect things. That would be Basch and Ashe, in either case.

He is not the main character. You played the game, you should know.
