I thought the difference was that one feels that a strong online model is essential, while the other barely tries.
Or that one is making money hand over fist and the other is responsible for billions in debt
But really, this whole thing about Nintendo not caring about the hardcore is simply the negative net result of their secrecy campaign. Nobody knows what games they are working on, so its easy to assume the worst, especially since we won't see any of these mystery games until fall at the earliest.

Well, I'll be pissed at Nintendo until they finally release a Luigi's Mansion 2 on the Wii.
I completely disagree with the OP though, Nintendo's already shot out so many of their huge "hardcore" IPs this generation.

i kinda agree but i think Nintendo does care about hardcores but they dont make as much money from hardcore games so those are generally on the back burner
