Just as other hardware makers have done, including Sony and Sharp:

Also Apple - there was a hardware refresh recently (past few weeks) that saw the hardware improve, and US prices stay constant. Australian prices raised, and presumably British prices did too

When I say that I would take a bullet for Nintendo, that also means that I will take a bullet for Nintendo's fans.

Based upon the 112 UKP trade price, upon release, that was worth 25,536 JPY. Currently that is worth 15680 JPY.

The new trade price (estimated at 131 UKP) is worth 18,340 JPY.

Estimated manufacturing cost of the Wii (at release) was $158 -- which translated to 18,486 JPY at the time (it would be $15,484 JPY based upon current exchange rates).

Mike from Morgantown

PS -- The $158 manufacturing estimate matches the $40-$45 profit per console on release in the US (if you factor in Wii Sports as being worth $50 -- the equivalent of its Japanese price).

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Nintendo seems to do the opposite of the other gaming companies and comes out on top :o

So this probably means that despite the cost of producing a ps3 is dropping, a price-drop is looking more unlikely.

I had found it shocking that the Wii hadn't ever changed in price, and that the more powerfull 360 had become cheaper. Instead the price goes up? They must be doing something wrong in the factories if it still is that expensive to make a Wii. Maybe they should take out the wi-fi. I never use the internet on my Wii.

^All this means is Nintendo is not settling to make less than what they've been profiting from every unit sold, even if it means charging their craving masses a little extra.

@Feylic: What makes consoles so special compared to other hardware?

My point is that it's perfectly justified to raise prices. It doesn't even matter if it reduces sales volume, profits matter a lot more in these times.

Nothing really, just that the OP has this in it, "The Nintendo Wii could be the first console in history that will not only have held its launch price for over two years,‭ ‬but actually increase it."

My point is that the OP clearly states that this is news worthy because it is a CONSOLE, then you go and throw in that other hardware makers have done the same thing and post a link to TVs. wtf?

A video game console is a consumer electronic device and so is a TV.

Aaaahg I know!, but what does that have to do with this thread!? Which is about consoles!

Prices have gone up for consumer electronics before, and it will happen again in the future.  It is nothing to freak out about.  These things happen.

Why are you oblivious to what I am trying to say... I know consumer electronics prices can go up EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT, this thread is about a gaming CONSOLE going up in price, which NO OTHER HAS DONE BEFORE!

I know what your are trying to say.  You are just needlessly narrowing your vision to try and make this a big deal.

I never ever, once said this was a big deal. The only deal I am making out of it, is that some people are trying to deflect the point of the thread, which is that this is the first time a console has increased in price. I understand that companies need to make a profit, and will change prices to do so, but to just brush this off as an everyday consumer electronics occurance is just wrong.

Like NJ5 said at the begining of the thread:

O my god, just never mind, you're clearly too dense.
