I thought the Wii was estimated to be making $6 profit per console.

If this is accurate then no wonder Nintendo are passing costs on.

Full of fail. The Wii cost around $150 to make at launch, and the price has without a shadow of doubt gone down.

If something starts with "analyst", you'll do best to just ignore it. Seriously.

http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/15/wii-manufacturing-costs-ring-up-to-just-158/

I was the one who earlier posted the 2006 article regarding the manufacturing costs.  It should be noted that even in the article it said that these cost estimates did not include marketing and Wiimotes and "what-nots." So the $158 was the guess on how much it cost just to make the console.

Since then, the dollar has fallen against the Yen (see my earlier post). So the estimated profit of $6 per profit may not be too far off.

Just remember that while some people are smarter than some analysts (namely Patcher), not everyone is smarter than every analyst.

At this moment in time it seem's that we're all making a big fuss over what may turn out to be nothing (for us consumers anyway). This trade price hike may or may not be passed onto us so until we get more info i say we all just take a step back relax and go back to our favourite pasttime... gaming.

It sucks, but Nintendo shouldn't have to eat economic factors out of their control. About a week after I bought a computer in October the price of the parts I bought went up about $250 total. Console's shouldn't be exempt from the situation.

The unfortunate thing here is that Microsoft and Sony have such deep pockets that they seem to be willing to eat losses in their game divisions whereas Nintendo can't exactly fall back on it's other sources of income since the gaming industry is all it has. It ends up making Nintendo look bad for trying to make a buck.

Don't know about that part. Whats sony falling back on nowadays? Yet..they haven't bumped the price. It really seems like greed on ninty's side honestly. It's not like they're taking a loss, it that the profits aren't as high as they used to be yet everyone ignores this little fact LMAO.

Granted Sony's not exactly in the best shape lately, but my point was more along the lines that at least they have other sources of revenue to help offset game division losses. Microsoft has lost money for years from their gaming division, and it barely registers against their massive revenues. Nintendo on the other  hand, could they really afford to sit there and take losses for years at a time without folding?

I know that's an over simplification, but I think there's a fundamental difference in how Sony and Microsoft approach profitibility in their game divisions compared to Nintendo.

I miss Donkey Kong Country games...from the SNES era... I mean, why can't Nintendo create new characters and new games for them like that anymore? Look what happened with the Wii in Japan, Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda were shadows of their former self, I guess the Japanese are getting fed up with Nintendo finally, could be a little part of the reason the sales are low (old Nintendo fans waiting for more old Nintendo-like games before deciding to buy the console).

it still will beat 360 and ps3 sadly

@Feylic: What makes consoles so special compared to other hardware?

My point is that it's perfectly justified to raise prices. It doesn't even matter if it reduces sales volume, profits matter a lot more in these times.

Nothing really, just that the OP has this in it, "The Nintendo Wii could be the first console in history that will not only have held its launch price for over two years,‭ ‬but actually increase it."

My point is that the OP clearly states that this is news worthy because it is a CONSOLE, then you go and throw in that other hardware makers have done the same thing and post a link to TVs. wtf?

A video game console is a consumer electronic device and so is a TV.

Aaaahg I know!, but what does that have to do with this thread!? Which is about consoles!

Prices have gone up for consumer electronics before, and it will happen again in the future.  It is nothing to freak out about.  These things happen.

Why are you oblivious to what I am trying to say... I know consumer electronics prices can go up EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT, this thread is about a gaming CONSOLE going up in price, which NO OTHER HAS DONE BEFORE!

I know what your are trying to say.  You are just needlessly narrowing your vision to try and make this a big deal.

I never ever, once said this was a big deal. The only deal I am making out of it, is that some people are trying to deflect the point of the thread, which is that this is the first time a console has increased in price. I understand that companies need to make a profit, and will change prices to do so, but to just brush this off as an everyday consumer electronics occurance is just wrong.

Like NJ5 said at the begining of the thread:

What makes consoles so special compared to other hardware?

O my god, just never mind, you're clearly too dense.
