Forums - Nintendo - RUMOR: GTA Wii hinges on success of GTA: Chinatown Wars

Here is a brief update. In relation to some exclusive information I gave you some time ago, my guess regarding Silicon Knights was wrong. Just to make up for it, though, I can reveal that publisher Take 2 and developer Rockstar are warming to Wii.

When developing the DS game ´Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars´, they were very happy with Nintendo's third party support and are considering a `Grand Theft Auto´ on Nintendo's newest. I had asked them last year whether a GTA on Wii was a possibility and they had categorically ruled that out. Now, it simply hinges upon the success of´GTA: Chinatown Wars´. If the DS title performs well enough, Rockstar will be swayed by its success and bring the franchise to Wii as well. Whether they would invest in an original installment running on a dedicated graphics engine is another question.

Now it'll be interesting to watch GTA: CW to see if it's a success or not, if it is then Wii may get an iteration of it's own..

What do you guys think?

Well I know I'm looking forward to China Town Wars.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Not surprising. The split between core and expanded audiences is more balanced than on Wii, so if it does well on DS there's a chance a Wii game would do well too. If it doesn't do well on DS it would do no better if not worse on Wii. Its mute in the end though seeing as no-one knows how many copes ChinaTown Wars needs to sell for rockstar to consider it to be a success. 1 million, 2 million, 500k? I can't wait till ChinaTown Wars does hit. The most important question though, is, will it blend?

I doubt that this kid actually talked to them, but it's not much of a stretch. They're really putting a marketing push behind Chinatown Wars, and they made headlines when they said that they're the right publisher to put M-rated content on the Wii.

Personally, I think CTW looks more fun than GTAIV--hope I can find space for it in my budget soon.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Sorry, don't follow the Wii much but do follow GTA.

What I wanted to ask is if Madworld is the first m-rated game on the Wii?

I think the sales of that would matter too. Give a good indication of the mature audience out there on the Wii.

I have no doubt Falafelkid has spoken to them, he's actually a well respected German journalist and was first to break the news about Red Steel. He's come up with the goods on countless other occations too.

People either weren't visiting the right sites before Wii was around or have very short memories..

I'm getting china town wars. Hoop indeed that it will lead to a gta on the wii. Would buy that also

absolutely not.

To name a few, there was Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, Manhunt 2, Resident Evil: Unbrella Chronicles, No More Heroes, House of the Dead 2 & 3 return.

Some have done good, while some have done poorly (manhunt 2 in particular).

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
