Forums - Nintendo - Monster Hunter Brings Subscriptions To Wii In Japan

An upcoming Monster Hunter game for Wii will charge Japanese users a monthly fee to play online, establishing the first instance of the MMO-style subscription structure on Nintendo's console.

Although Nintendo doesn't charge for online play on Wii, the manufacturer gives publishers the option to use their own business models, and Capcom is exercising that right with the Wii version of Monster Hunter G. According to a Famitsu blog post translated by Siliconera, the game will run $8 for 30 days of play, $15 for 60 days, or $20 for 90 days, paid in Wii points.

The game is a port of the PlayStation 2 and PSP game of the same name, itself expanded from the original Monster Hunter. Although it was revised and released in North America as Monster Hunter Freedom (which received its own followups), Capcom does not appear to have plans to bring the Wii version of G Stateside -- meaning Monster Hunter subscription fees will stay localized to Japan for now.

Monster Hunter, which reached its fifth anniversary this week, has proven to be a huge hit for Capcom, particularly in Japan, which has seen numerous console releases as well as a PC MMO.

The original PlayStation 2 game featured online support in North America, but Capcom discontinued the service in late 2007.

Not sure if it's a good idea and not sure if Capcom is using this as a test to see if they should charge online for Monster Hunter 3. This is certainly an interesting play though.

Also, it doesn't look like Monster Hunter G will be released outside Japan. However, if Capcom charges online for Monster Hunter 3 in Japan, I'm wondering if Capcom will apply the same charge outside Japan market. (that's assuming Monster Hunter 3 will be released outside Japan which I think it's highly likely)

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Did the PS2/PSP versions' online cost anything?

I don't think PSP version even has online? I think you can only play if your friends have PSP nearby. (forgot how that function is called)

"And yet, I've realized that maybe living a "decent" life means you won't ever have a "good" life."

Wow that sucks...

PS2 version didn't have a subscription.

  • 2010 MUST Haves: WKC, Heavy Rain, GoWIII, Fable III, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, Darksiders, FFXIII, Alan Wake, No More Heroes 2, Fragile Dreams: FRotM, Trinity: SoZ, BFBC2.
  • Older Need To Buys: Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Deadspace, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2.

There is definitely more to list that I want, but that's my main focus there.

It's called ad-hoc.

But what about the PS2 version, then?

At any rate, it would be pretty lame if they charged for the online for MH3.

would be weird if Capcom charges for Monster Hunter G but not Monster Hunter 3. The only reason I see that happen is the play backfires big time and Capcom totally gets crucified.

Monster Hunter on PS2 in Japan ALWAYS had a subscription. Its no different now. When they brought Monster Hunter to the US online was FREE. Subs were only in Japan.

PSP online is free. This wont come to NA.

If I have to pay to play online for Monster Hunter 3, that will mean one of two things.

1. I will never take the game online.

or

2. I will never buy the game in the first place.

I was actually looking forward to this game a little bit too.

Wait. You have to pay to play MH 3 on Wii?

(scratches MH3 Wii off "most wanted 2009" list)

I was under the impression that MH3 Wii would be similar to MH2 PSP, in that you could hook up with pals to play, or play solo, without some wacky subscription. The PSP MH3 suddenly got way more attractive.
