Forums - Nintendo - Why are the Wii/GC Discs weird?

its probably a bit cheaper to do it that way

I like Wii disks better.. I'm not a fan of DVD disks due to their overcomplicated art.. I actually think they're the ones that look cheap..

I think too much art reduces the disc's life span?

I agree, though the GC ones being even simpler doesn't work as well.... I just checked some of mine and they only ever have 1 or 2 colour of ink (though there can be patches with no ink which view the silver CD colour) and if there are 2 they are often in stark contrast to each other and don't seem to be able to "mix" as well (mixing being when they use small dots of both colours to create a third colour or a gradient between the 2)

The Star Fox Adventures disc is ugly.

Yeah I agree with you there TWRoO.

I like the Wii disks far more than the GCN disks mostly for the reasons you stated.

Who cares what the disc looks like your going to barely see it. It's mostly going to be in the case or in the console. Why should they spend like more money on the disc design when you barely see it.

Incidentally, if you think Wii game disc art is bland, here's a bit of perspective for you.

That is not a blank game cartridge. That's a copy of Halloween for the Atari 2600. More than a few copies of the game have no label at all. Some of them have the game's name handwritten onto the cartridge, or on standard office labels, with a marker pen. Misspelled sometimes, to boot.

So don't complain, 'cause it could be much, much worse.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Haven't noticed but I suspect all companies are copying each other with that hole in the middle, and why is it always round, how about a nice octagon or rhombus to liven things up!!

:P

I think you might be onto something there Galaki.

I recently pulled out Super Monkey Ball 2 (GC) for my little girl to play on the Wii.  It is a game that has nice looking disk art on it and the disk broke in half while I was pulling it out of the case.  I have never had this happen to any optical media I have ever owned.  CD/DVD or other wise, and those 1.5 gig disks are super small.  How could it of broken in half?
