If you've never played Mario 64 you should at least get the DS remake, it has aged btter then you'd think. It really is one of the best action games of all time. Sadly I think Mario 64 was the peak of the Mario franchise. None of the later ones have been anywhere near as good; they all keep adding gimicky crap that ruins what made Mario 64 great.

what other reason could there be

Nah it's not overrated but people are entitled to their opinions I suppose. I still think its the best game I've ever played and could probably give some pretty strong reasoning behind it but hey that's my opinion and then there is theirs. No biggie. I could even go as far to say its under rated because it still deserves more respect than it gets but still just my opinion.
I agree with every word of that article, A Link to the Past is the better game and has always been. Last great Zelda game if you ask me.
It's not. But TP is while WW is underatted.
@ James Bond: I find Galaxy to be better then Mario64 which surprised me.

To notice the true beauty of the game, you had to have played the old games. The leap from 2D to 3D was a huge thing back then! As a kid, it was impressive. That's probably why you didn't enjoy it much Impulsitivity, but that's my take on it. If you played the game after playing a bunch of third person games or other 3D games, yeah, you'd think it's just a normal 3D game when you're into this generation now or whatever. That's why you have to think about the time frame when the game got released and what it did to the gaming community as a whole. |
I already had that experience playing the supeior Mario 64 over a year earlier. Zelda didn't really have the sense of a wide open vertical world like Mario did. You could barely jump, there were a few vertical levels but they were all just from climbing...It was just not as good as Link to the Past or other 3D adventure games both before and after.

I could never get into this game! I never understood why gamers hyped this game into something far superior than other titles that deserve recognition i.e. Okami.
Sounds to me like they're not arguing that OoT is overrated, but rather arguing why ALttP is better than OoT, which is definitely a fair argument. Personally I think OoT is wayyyyyy better than ALttP but that's just me.

Just pure hype.
OoT is an amazing game, but people still claim it to be the best game of all time, I can't really pick any specific bad points about the game except that the skultula side-quest was boring and unrewarding.
OoT did age pretty well I would say, most games seem very dated by the end of the generation, or early into the next gen... but OoTs appeal lasted longer than usual. However it has been nearly 12 years now, and it isn't up to the standard of some of todays games (no I am not talking just graphics).
very few games totally defy their age, particularly 3D games (likely the effect of better methods of 3D control).
Super Mario 64 has aged much better than OoT, but it has still aged. I had the luxury (??) of playing both SM64 and Galaxy for my first time, within months of each other.... and Galaxy is definately the better game now.
