Today I wrote a 6-page paper (started it at about 3 am) comparing nuclear explosions (which follow the pattern of light, heat, impact, sound) to the nuclear explosion in the totally amazing short animation DAICON IV that some radical dudes made for a sci-fi convention in 1983 before they founded Gainax (link), the giant explosion that starts the film Akira in 1988, and the Second Impact from Neon Genesis Evangelion in 1995.  I discussed the ways these different animated explosions either mimic real explosions or play with them in different ways, depending on the narrative and thematic goals they want to achieve with their giant explosions.  For a better idea of what I'm talking about, click that link to see a nuclear explosion made out of cherry blossoms.  It also has Darth Vader.  Really.
