I used to be annoyed that FFXIII was taking forever, now I'm thankful. I now know just how god awful a rushed Square Enix game can be. Immagine the outcry if FFXIII was anything like IU.

I've played Enchanted Arms (pretty bad) Star Ocean 4 (decent) tales (pretty good) IU (REALLY bad) Blue Dragon (I thought it was really bad until I played IU, now I just think of it as bad), Lost Oddyssey (the worst Final Fantasy never made, bad stilted animation, iffy gameplay, annoying characters the works), Eternal Sonata (pretty good when compared with the rest of the crop) And the sole AAA 360 RPG, Mass Effect, which is the best WRPG since Knights of the Old Republic and will probably remain the best recent RPG until Dragon Age, which looks awesome. Maybe I missed on here and there (I didn't play Lost Odyssey for one) but I think I've tried almost all of the 360 RPGs right? I still have yet to find one thats anywhere near as good as the heyday PS2 RPGs much less the glory days of JRPGs during the PS1 era. I was just falling over near classic JRPGs most of which were from Square during the PS1's run. I would give about anything for a HD parasite Eve or Vagrant Story game. |
how can u say a game is bad if u havent played it lost odyssey got bad reviews because they sent the review copies out before they were done polishing it. i didnt find any freezing on my copy
btw u forgot zoids assault, operation darkness, and sprecttral force 3
I definitely thought IU was better, though I admit I quit playing TLR relatively early.

I did play lost oddyssey, the only good part about that game was the stories you came across from time to time which were engaging. I would rather have just read a book of those stories then played the game tbh.
The animation being stilted was NOT freezing, it was the way the bodies moved. They were poorly animated to the point where when my girlfriend saw me playing (in the part where they are discussing strategy in that capital room) she laughed because the animation was so bad and everything looked so silly. I mean Last Remnant, that was a mistake when I said Lost Oddyssey.

Stay away from IU. I haven't tried last remnant yet.
Not a 360 fanboy, just a PS3 fanboy hater that likes putting them in their place ^.^
Oh come on! What kind of question is this?
Let us look at the facts here shall we?
Team SaGa = My favorite.
So with that undeniable proof right there it is totally obvious that "The Last Remnant" is the better game.
iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.
Currently playing:
Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

If The Last Remnant had its load time and lag flaws removed (IE if someone were to buy the PC version with high end hardware) what would you give it? Would it rise to a near classic or would it still be in the high 70s with all the technical problems removed? Want to know whether to get it on the 24th. I don't know what ES is doing that low relative to Blue Dragon, ES was better in almost every way I thought (then again I never really liked Dragon Ball Z or any of that kind of thing so maybe if you're a fan its better)

With my 78 score for TLR, I am using a composite of the scores I would give it with, and without the HDD install. I'd give it a 74-75 without the install, and 82-83 with. The game 'feels' different when you have no load times, no frame drops, and greatly reduced texture pop in. It still has it's problems, but helps put it closer to the upper-eschelon of JRPGs on the 360. It's not 'near classic' thanks to the storyline, pacing, and a few combat flaws. However, the game oozes ambition, and hits so many good chords that a strategy-based RPG has not had in ages. I can only HOPE that Square Enix revisits the TLR formula, and polishes it. I think that if they took the combat/union system, attached a better story, and less technical problems, they'd have the best JRPG on the 360. Really hope that TLR2 comes out, or a spiritual successor.
As for ES and BD....My problem with ES is the fact that the story (at least in the US translation) is the most god-awful story I've ever had the displeasure of playing through. Ever. It gets so contrived and meaningless in the last 2 chapters, it loses it's soul. Furthermore, the economy of the game is borked due to Beat's camera, and the battle system became stale at the end of the game.
For Blue Dragon, I feel that, despite the unoriginality of what the game presented - between the storyline, and overall 'feel', the fact remains it was well-executed, and there's a lot of depth to the battle system. Throw in incredible graphics, and Uematsu's best soundtrack in ages (IMO), and I think it was a great game. I know I've rated it much higher than other games, but BD is a love-or-hate-it game, and I revel in all of it's faithful homage to a well-executed 16 bit game.
Ultimately, JRPGs fall into 4 categories:
In many of the X360's JRPG cases, few games are in the 'ambitious' pile. Only TLR and ES are truely in that category (both for combat, and ES for visuals). Neither game follows in the 'polish' category which many other JRPGs have gone into (BD, LO and most of all, ToV). On the other side, many games feel uninspired, as few rely on any 'new' innovations. Even my favorite JRPG, Tales of Vesperia, is outside of this category. On the other end, many are flawed in major fashions, and some like PSU, IU and EM are just plain uninspired, and lack any sort of soul. LO and BD could also be lobbied (slightly) as being uninspired, as they rely on former inventions of the genre.
Of course, very few JRPGs ever hit chords as both ambitious and inspired. 2 of the few JRPGs I can think on that faithfully executed on those formats would be all-time greats such as Chrono Trigger, and Kingdom Hearts. The Last Remnant had some glimmers of Chrono Trigger-esque choices in combat, but the overall package is severely lacking. But it could with a TLR2, however.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Woah, now. Here is where I have to disagree. Lost Odssey and Tales, while my two favorite 360 games, are definetly not polished JRPGs. Both of them cut corners whether it be bugs, technical issues, or lackluster AI.
I haven't beaten BD, so I won't comment. I do think if Tales and LO were in development for a few more they would have that level of polish that only Final Fantasy usually achieves.
What about ToV was unpolished? I've never had any frame issues (despite a dozen+ enemies on screen, while using many artes), has almost no loading times, and so on. It's the most polished JRPG the X360 offers.
LO was 'mostly' polished, compared to other JRPGs on the 360, but was less polished than PS2 counterparts.
