Look up Sony's financial reports. Since the PS3 has been launched the losses have been worse then the profits all during the PS2 era. These numbers are accurate up to about last April. Sony has lost more since then... and PS2 started in 2000. With support from PS1 which was another 9-10 year system. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=284797&page=4 Sony Nintendo Microsoft Industry 1998 1,253,000,000 809,000,000 2,062,000,000 1999 1,431,000,000 817,000,000 2,248,000,000 2000 900,000,000 519,000,000 1,419,000,000 2001 -488,000,000 866,000,000 378,000,000 2002 731,000,000 939,000,000 -880,000,000 790,000,000 2003 1,076,000,000 642,000,000 -1,365,000,000 353,000,000 2004 731,000,000 355,000,000 -1,367,000,000 -281,000,000 2005 440,000,000 846,000,000 -528,000,000 758,000,000 2006 79,000,000 942,000,000 -1,329,000,000 -308,000,000 2007 -1,969,000,000 1,489,000,000 -1,892,000,000 -2,372,000,000 2008 -1,254,000,000 2,480,000,000 532,000,000 1,758,000,000 |
ok... by those numbers you give ... 2007 was the worse year for every body exept for nintendo and we all know why... sony is no diferent from any other tecnology company... that said ... in business we have to spend money to make money... they might be falling in the numbers part and there are alot of reasons to that other then ps3 in paticular, but as a console and it is what this tread is about... IMO they did an excellent job. they where wrong thinking that every body takes games as serius as they, but that is a business market target fail not a product fail...

You don't think most people consider the N64 and the Gamecube failures? Did you miss all the articles about how the Gamecube was going to force Nintendo out of the console market? I suppose you could argue they weren't failures because they didn't lose Nintendo money. (See above chart) But then again they might have and the portables just made it up.

No, i never really saw any anti Nintendo blogs in last generation. Nintendo made profit thanks to Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Color, Gamecube has almost nothing to do with it. And i think the people who think N64 is a failure are rare to find. It finished second above Saturne and below PS1.

Those numbers are for SCE.
So they are for
PS2 and PS2 games (Very profitable)
PSP and PSP games (Profitable)
PS3 (unprofitable.)
Heck the PS3 has been more then a failure... it's a disaster. It's almost "Final Fantasy: Spirits Within" level.

Even Nintendo refers to the Gamecube as a failure.

Even Nintendo called it a failure. Sadly this interview isn't here anymore due to 1ups changing their site but here is the article link.

EGM has an interesting and shockingly straightforward interview with George Harrison, senior vice president at Nintendo of America, about the past, present, and future of the video gaming company. In a nutshell, Harrison admits that Nintendo has made some mistakes, specifically with the GameCube, and asks that Nintendo fans keep the faith. He talks about the decision to not include DVD functionality in the Cube, the fact that it wasn't backwards-compatible, and that it doesn't have the good gaming consistency needed to thrive in a three console market.

That first picture's a lie!! The 20GB doesn't have a chrome or silver trim, just black!! Also the 160GB only has 2 USB ports!!! BUMB!!!
OT: Some good points here, but I don't think the sysytem is failing.

Are you kidding me? PSP games profitable? PSP has the worst software sales because of hackers who hacked it and made it play pirated games. PS3 software sales on the other hand have been increased for 65%.PS3 actually had 2 top selling games on the list last week outselling both Wii sports and wii fit.
How are PSP games not profitable for Sony? They get a liscensing fee for every game produced... and it costs them nothing for the majority of them.
The only thing that's losing Sony big bucks is the PS3 in the gaming department.
It's not somethign you can get around. The numbers are right infront of your eyes up there. The loses coincide with the PS3. It's not some magical coincidence.
Ask sony themselves and they'll tell you. The PS3 lost them tons of money.
Do you honestly expect the PS3 to ever be more successful then the PS2 in terms of profit?
If not... the PS3 will end the generation costing Sony money.
How is that not a failure?
