Forums - Microsoft - Xbox UK chief doesn't believe Sony's 20m PSN figure

I don't trust either number.

Both Live and PSN numbers are padded with people who have multiple or unused accounts. Sony counts PSN forum ids and MS counts Windows Live ids as XBox members.

Any PR/Marketing announcement should always be taken with a grain of salt, I agree with you there.

IN this case though, MS has stated these are active user accounts (the methods of thier identifying what is "active" is still ambiguous) where as Sony seems content in just giving a number (with no real explanation of what that number entails).

Microsoft can track everything your doing when your on live.

PSN is free...why is it so hard to believe it would surpass live members?

It isn't. However, the implication behind Sony's claims is hard to swallow when creations of new PSN accounts are outpacing PS3 sales.

Can't you make a PSN account on a PSP? That is like another 45M potential accounts there right?

Yes. Plus there's a lot of dupe accounts thanks to stupid things like the North American Killzone 2 demo debacle and this situation where OutRun Online Arcade is to be released only on the European PSN. Plus forum members are counted, and this undoubtedly includes thousands of people who just went to troll Killzone 2. So I think PSN numbers don't really mean the same thing as Xbox Live numbers at all.

Oh yeah.  That is true isn't it.  Lots of people on these boards made an extra account or two to get at demos faster.

doesnt matter at all if psn has passed xbl yet or not because it will happen eventually since it's free.

I bet Wii have like about 400K active online users. Most of them don't know what internet is.

No, they do not...and its interesting to see that you understand this but the idiots at MS don't seem to. This report should not be taken as the number PSN users as compared to Live users... I have 4 PSN accounts! The number of PSN accounts was bound to become larger than Live accounts for two reasons:

1 - PSN is free.

2 - PSN is accessible from the Internet and PSP.

Which one of those two reasons explains why you have 4 PSN accounts?

17 million XBL members they say, but they never mention how many are gold subscribers, so there can be plenty of dupe accounts for XBL. As mentioned before PSN is free and it's not just possible but probable that the online gaming userbase is gaining ground on the Gold subscribers absolutely.

They did say that the majority of Xbox Live members are gold accounts, and then this article popped up:

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=209037

56% according to some leaked document.

56% its hardly a majority.
