Forums - Gaming - Was 2008 the best year of gaming the world has seen?

2008 was also the year for many awesome games as well and is still the most fresh in our memories. New gamers as well as older gamers are most aware of these recent events. Many new IP's came out this year although not all sold like hotcakes. In response 1988 and 1998 threads and I kept the 10 year deal going.

No Specific Order

1) Grand Theft Auto IV (easily the the best selling game this generation between the HD twins.)

2) World of Goo (A creative game that came out on PC and WiiWare which made gaming unique once again.)

3) LittleBigPlanet (I mean wow this game was off my radar but impressed the hell out of people with its level creations.)

4) Gears of War 2 ( This game took an already great game and made it better and showed how 360 can sell software.)

5) Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Great game nuf said!)

6) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 (Shows that the PS2 can still have great games even in a new generation.)

7) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (Teh Cell!!! lol But this game is great hands down! Even if the cut scenes are ridiculous at times.)

8) Fallout 3 (Love or Hate it this game rocks your socks off. Oblivion with guns = Pure Win!)

9) World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (Probably on of the highest selling expansion packs ever to a great game.)

10) Chrono Trigger DS (What more could any fan of the SNES classic ask for?...... Maybe a 3D remake :P)

11) Braid (Arguably the best X360 down loadable game ever!)

12) Rock Band 2/Guitar Hero World Tour (Let's take Music gaming and make it even better!)

13) Mass Effect (New IP that was great although very buggy but created something to wait for Mass Effect 2.)

14) Bioshock PS3 (Let PlayStation gamers have this great game that came to the 360 first but with extra content to make up. Shows if a game is ported right it can still be great even a year later.)

15) Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 (Showed that even a 2nd integration can sell huge on Xbox Live.)

16) Dead Space (The new OMG I almost S**t my pants! This game showed that there is still room for new awesome Survival/Horror IPs.)

17) Left 4 Dead (New Zombie IP that proved to be good and can have sexy legs :))

18) Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (Great 2D fighter proved to be even better in HD and online.)

19) Fable II (Everything they promised in Fable for Xbox but even better.)

20) Burnout Paradise (Great racing game that broke away slightly from it routes and is still supported to this day by it's devs.)

21) The World Ends With You (The best RPG produced this year from SquareEnix. A great original IP and the one of the best RPGs you've never played.)

22) Grid (Great original Racing IP with room for improvement that will be even better with Grid 2.)

23) Bionic Commando Rearmed (It's Bionic Commando but Better!)

24) Resistance 2 ( Best shooter on PS3 for 2008 and 60 player online! Nuf said!)

25) Valkyria Chronicles (The best game you never played.)

26) Patapon (This is a good game that sold very good for very little advertising.)

27) Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Honestly the only game I know nothing about but it sells and I hear good things.)

28) Call of Duty: World at War (A lot of high expectations coming from CoD4 but managed to be a great shooter. But how could they fail using the CoD4 formula.)

29) Soulcalibur IV (Yoda + Darth Vader is win all over.)

30) Boom Blox (Best EA game for the Wii yet. Very creative, fun, and addicting.)

31) Final Fantasy IV (Its Final Fantasy IV, but in 3D :D)

32) Battlefield: Bad Company (Destructible environments galore FTW!)

33) Mega Man 9 (Easy or not, you know you loved it. Shows that a good 2D Mega Man in HD is possible.)

34) Prince of Persia (Wow, I was not expecting this game but I enjoyed in more that any other prince of Persia.)

35) Devil May Cry 4 (Showed that Multiplat games are the way to go for developers.)

36) Tales of Vesperia (Great RPG with lackluster sales. Still its awesome and its a Tales game!)

37) No More Heroes (Best surprise of the year. Should have sold way better.)

38) Motorstorm Pacific Rift (Sweet game for any off-road enthusiast like myself.)

39) Ninja Gaiden II (This game is bloody, gory, and hard. If your up to a challenge buy this game.)

40) Mario Kart Wii (One of the funnest pick up and play games for the Wii with a friend.)

41) Crises Core: Final Fantasy VII (Everything a Final Fantasy VII fan wanted. Besides a remake.)

42) Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice (I love Disgaea shouldn't you :P)

43) PixelJunk Eden (These games are fun and creative hands down.)

44) Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts (A classic brought back to life.)

45) Gran Turismo 5: Prologue (Best dam demo I've ever played.)

46) Mirror's Edge (Very original, challenging, and beautiful. This game shows that EA is finally serious to make new better IPs.)

47) Lost Odyssey (This game was very fun and my first RPG of the new gen.)

48) Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty (For the price you can't beat it, plus its a Ratchet & Clank game.)

49) Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (Poor Midway, but at least they went out in style with a good beat em up.)

50) Wii Fit (I personally don't like it but now one can deny it's selling power of software and hardware. Also it's good that people are wanting to lose weight and become healthy, guess it was a better idea than Wii Eat.)

These are not in any specific order and is all I could bear to type.

The main problem with your 2008 thread is that Bionic Commando Rearmed is an enhanced remake of a NES game from 1988, Mega Man 9 is a direct sequel and tribute to a NES game from 1988, and Ninja Gaiden II is a sequel to an arcade game from 1988. They're all crappy sequels of amazing original games from my thread.

I understand what you mean. Still though there are people who never got to play the originals like you and me might have and although they might not be as good in your's and my eyes they are still great games for other players out there. Ninja Gaiden II was mainly put in there for being even bloodier than ever before. Different strokes for different folks. I don't agree with everything on the list either and wish I could've went into more detail but I'm tired and been up for 24 hours. lol

I liked 2007 a lot more then 2008

I would think they were pretty equal as well but Fallout 3 and Valkyrie Chronicles have kept me glued to my TV all the way until now.

If your talking about this gen 2007 would probably be the best year for gaming but both years are far from best year ever.

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!

Yup I agree it isn't the best but I decided to keep the 10 year thing going. Personally my actual favorite years were 1995-97. PS1 and N64 era is where I really started to develop my gaming taste. RPGs and Platformers then became my favorite genre. I started to collect all the NES, SNES, Genesis Sega CD, GameBoy, Saturn, and any game system I could find RPGs on. To this day RPG is my favorite but FPSs have also found a way into my heart as well as racing games.

Agreed.

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

2007 unzips its pants and slaps 2008 with its cock.

Super Mario Galaxy, Halo 3, Bioshock, CoD4, Uncharted, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Mass Effect, Metroid Prime 3, Forza, Ratchet and Clank, Virtua Fighter 5, Phantom Hourglass, and God of War II fucks up 2008.

It was a pretty good year, but nowhere close to being the best. Not even sure if it should be in the Top 10.
