Forums - Gaming - To all FPS/TPS gamers...Poll about in-game sounds.

Just out of curiousity...i would like to take a poll....but i think this will be more related to hardcore FPS/TPS players...

Do you guys use sound quite a bit?  I'm not talking about using sound only to see if ur getting shot from left or right side...but also to hear is someone is running in ur area?

If you played CS...you know exactly what i'm talking about.  It's very important to me because i'm a big CS player...but i'm wondering if console players use sound to their advantage?

To us CS players headphones are more important than speakers...is that true for console FPS/TPS games like Halo, Gears, KZ2??

out of 1-10 rate how important sound is to you and in which game and would you prefer headphones or surround system for serious gaming?

KZ2 - 8

Resistance - 7

CS 1.6 - 10

i personally prefer headphone..but games like resistance...i dont mind using surround

damn...do none of you guys use sound??...i must be in the wrong section...hello???

yeah, but mostly only in gears 1/2 and counter-strike source

No sound is not used as much..it should be quite obvious to you why since you are a CS player...

Console shooters don't focus on walling as much, and the only big console shooters you can wall in are CoD..and maybe KZ2 since I haven't played it. Sound is also not as important since a lot of console games have radar.

As a FPS player you should understand this already, the context of how and when and why sound is important and for what games. Console games tend to have characters that can run faster/sprint. In games with this option sound becomes less important, the faster a character can move the harder it will be to determine where they'll go/when they're going to pop out that corner. Also since bullet do not stagger in console shooters as opposed to cs, constant movement is encouraged more and as a result camping becomes less effective.

I used sound a lot in Call of Duty to get a sense of where enemies are coming from. You can hear them run towards you and from whichever direction. I don't need surround sound or headphones though. It comes through fine on my tv.

Sound is important to me, When I snipe I make sure to listen and hear anyone trying to sneak up on me. Its hard in Killzone2 because so much is going on sometimes you cant hear yourself walk.

I think that sound has a huge impact in games where there is cover and you are trying to play tactically. So far Gears of War in multiplayer it is a huge advantage, and you know who is playing with surround sound and who is not. I have not tried gaming headphones, but playing in 5.1 (7.1), sound localiziation is extremely important. Even in games like Fable 2, where you are trying to find the gargoyles, if you can localize the sound then you can find the gargoyle easier. I think in FPS games sound is not as important. Playing on a regualr TV takes away from the gaming experience from the audio perspective.

killzone 2's sound-fx were pretty touch class. possibly better fx quality then crysis. however what worries me is these games tend to have very generic musical scores. I fire up killzone and the orchestra score plays but its so generic that it doesn't feel like killzone. I can hear music from some games like FF, folklore, disgaea and know just from music what it is.
