Forums - Gaming - JRPGs...What the hell happened to you?

I prefer FF after FF7 than before, but I agree that besides the main FF series most RPG are usually bad quality, I have seen that they try hard to emulate what SE does with their main series but fail cuz they have less production values and they cant have the most awesome CGI cutscenes, graphics, money to devlop larger games or pay a great composer to make their music.

That and that SE isnt trying hard and releases to many remakes or cashins which are really mediocre may seem like a downfall in the genre.

I think JRPG's arnt evolving, story and gameplay wise so they get stale especially when when the same character persona's in appear in every JRPG

In anime are the characters stale? The majority have a metrosexual/emo style and are still selling very well. I love anime and regardless of how "stale" the look is, I watch it for the personality and the stories. This can be similarly stated for JRPG's while adding successful videogame attributes and eastern-centrist attitudes to the mix.

I think its odd we all have complaints of the genre not going anywhere and then clamoring for a remake of FF7. (That being said, I really want a remake of Xenogears)

Yes I am a fan of the Playstation 3, but I am an even bigger fan of intelligent and rational dialog. (If you are up for an intelligent exchange of ideas, you are more than welcome to add me as a friend)

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future......NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

(haven't been playing much since I am broke)

The genre is going somewhere.  People just aren't noticing it.

All of you guys seem to have forgotten about Tales of Vesperia and Valkyria Chronicles.

Isn't VC more of a SRPG? I like them but I get burnt out easily from them. Jeanne'D Arc is a SRPG I loved but I can't buy that many of them. Ps3 seems to have quite a few of them though.

Exactly. Quality JRPG's. However quality has nothing to do with the fall of JRPG's this gen.

No i meant is Characters are and stories in JRPG's are becomming almost like cut and pasted, like I know its harder to be original but so developers arnt even trying

It may have something to do with the cost of development nowadays and the fact that your average JRPG never sold to much more than your neighborhood

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

I must be in the minority here being that I actually like long cut scenes. (If they aren't bad.)

While I too long for more innovative, quality JRPGs...they're certainly still around if you go looking beyond the big names. Persona 3 and 4. Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of Vesperia, The world ends with you, Ys 1&2, Disgaea, Crisis Core, Jeanne d'Arc, even Lost Odyssey deserves to be in here. It's traditional sure, but it deserves more than people give it.

Those were just off the top of my head. They're not all straight up JRPGs, but they all hail from the land of the rising sun, and they all rock.

Person 1: Does Valkyria Chronicles have trophies?
Person 2:  No.
Person 1: Forget it. I'm not buying it.
Person 2: Wait! It's amazing! Unique, charming, drop dead gorgeous... Hello?
