Forums - Microsoft - Old school Sega fans have to check out Ninja Blade

Its no secret that I own 2 Xbox360s, one of which is banned on xbox live because it was modded by my friend. I bought that one of my friend for really cheap 3 months ago who bought a new 360 and modded it again...

In any case, I was at his place and he showed me Ninja Blade. I don't know how he had it a month before it is released in NA but I couldn't resist checking it out.

In any case, the game screams SEGA of the old when it comes to gameplay, more specifically, the Dreamcast era Sega. I know it’s not made by Sega, but somehow From Software has managed to capture the arcade like excitement I really haven't experience very often since the Dreamcast.

I have borrowed the game and I am about 4 hours in to it...and so far I have surfed on a airplane missile, driven a motorcycle on busses that are being launched in the air by a giant worm, fought dozens of giant crabs in the middle of Tokyo and throws a bulldozer on the face of a sexy Japanese chick with snakes for arms.

The game is nothing like ninja gaiden or any hack and slash on the market. Its much more user friendly and you don't have to level up your character, understand what’s going on, learn the moves but instead you start having fun as soon as you push the start button. All that stuff is there (leveling up, story, depth) but it’s not necessary to enjoy the game.

This is one of those games where you won't give any thought to graphics, sound, resolution, control scheme, frame rate...you just wont care because the game is a total blast.

There are other hints of old Sega games ... the story for example is ludicrous...but the dialogue is told with such confidence that you will actually get in to it. Just think of Shenmue like dialogue being told in a House of Dead 2...

If you remember and have enjoyed Dreamcast games like Cannon Spike, Alien Front Online, House of Dead 2, Dynamite cop, powerstone or a recent game called Earth Defense Force 2017 on the 360...you really need to check this out. It doesn't play anything like those games gamplay wise but has the exact same fun factor.

It’s going to be a day 1 purchase for me despite the fact I will beat it by then. I have a feeling this game will become a cult hit like Godhand, Killer 7, Radient Slvergun, Streets of rage 3...etc...

It's possible he got it from play-asia.com or whatever. I've really liked what I've seen of the game (especially the missile surfing and ridiculous costumes), but I NEED THAT DEMO!

The demo reminded me a bit of a new age Golden Axe. With lots of QTE though, but the QTE was pretty well done, for what it was anyway.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

@badgenome

Demo is a pretty accurate representation of the gameplay...but it does play it safe. The demo is basically the first level and its trying to fool the gamers in thinking this game is going to be normal and "realistic". By the 3rd level you will be some insane shit.

@Shadowblind

The hack and slash parts could be looked as a new age golden axe. Enemy patterns aren't hard to pick up like in Ninja gaiden but you aren't button mashing at all.

The quicktime events however get pretty frequent...and really insane. Things like...A, X, Up, Down, AAAA, push X as fast as possible...and Y to finish the monster. And let me tell you that they are the funnest part of the game... When I play it, I honestly can't wait for the next crazy boss fight and I hope its all quick time events, as insane as that sounds.

Plus when you miss a QTE the game rewinds infront of you and you do it all over...but buton combos are different...it can be cahllenging.

This is an amazing arcade throwback look. I've already forgotten about Ninja Gaiden. Watch this in HD.

Great video! If this and Demon's Soul turn out to be as awesome as they look, maybe all the From Software haters will STFU.

 Haha good one.

Well Sega saturn had real blast processing with 3 parallel CPUs but no one wanted to touch it...so the fake blast processing was prefered.

Otherwise I just beat level 5 and game still kicks ass. Microsoft is smart to publish it... It may not bring in massive sales but the game does bring uniqe experience to a console.

One minor fault with the game is that you cant save mid level. Levels can be up to 45 mins long depending howmuch you die...and are only save after you beat them. Kinda sucks...but you wont care as replaying the same level occasionally because you couldnt save it and yuou had to stop playing is still pretty fun.
