Forums - Sony - 11 ways Sony can find its way on top Next-Gen (PS4)

I seriously hope they don't push for the most powerful console again, because that's what screwed them over this gen.

They poured tonnes of money into breaking their traditional gameplan which has worked (make a console that is not the most powerful, but able to keep up with its competitor BUT focus on the games) and decided (seemingly randomly) to make the most powerful console on paper, without regard for how it'd play out in real life.

I think in all Honesty Kutaragi let his head get to him and in the end Sony and the Playstation brand on a whole suffered. They probably thought the brand name alone could justify the high price tag

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

if SONY does all these things

I don't see why they can't come a strong second next gen

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

US$300 is way too low for a launch. My bet is 400-450 and the strongest console. MS will go casual.

Going the strongest console route is what put them in last place. The PS1/PS2 were the perfect Middle ground in Hardware capabilities among their generation. For the PS4 Sony should try using that to their advantage again and use existing technology to be able to launch at a lower price point.

The biggest problem for Sony (in my opinion) is that the high price and constant promises of a "10 year plan" for the PS3 make it unlikely that Sony would be able to produce a console less than 12 months after the first console is released next generation. Now, it has happened in the past and is plausable that by the time the PS4 comes to market the leading console for the next generation could aready be decided ...

Basically, suppose that Nintendo (or Microsoft) release their next generation console in the summer of 2011 and it sells like the Wii and Sony doesn't release their next console until Christmas 2012; by the time the PS4 is released its competition could have a 30 to 40 Million unit lead on it and will have secured the lion's share of development resources.

Is it possible for Sony to come in first in the next generation? Yes, but that would require Nintendo and Microsoft to make mistakes which prevent the market from embracing them ... In other words, its not really in Sony's control

Funny thing is, the CELL is more powerful then all home computers even now I think. They could very well just beef up the cell(double the cores or something?) for not much of an extra price. If I am not mistaken it was designed so that more cores and stuff could be added at very little cost later down the road.

The main thing that will make the PS4 cost more then 200 dollars would be the graphics card. My bet is like 299-399. I doubt they will go with different versions. And if they use a beefed up cell, the BC would be very easy for them. They could even stick an RSX in there for next to nothing and do a pure hardware emulation if it was needed.

You may think it but that doesn't make it true ...

The Cell processor has yet to demonstrate a real world performance advantage over the XBox 360's CPU, and the XBox 360's CPU was very similar in performance to a mid-range gaming PC of 2005. In the past 4 years CPUs have continued to increase in performance quite dramatically, and even the untra low cost and low energy consumption Intel Atom processors are rapidly approaching the performance of the Cell processor.
