Last I checked (Wikipedia, 2 minutes ago) Crysis released November 2007.  It is now March 2009, or less than one and a half years later.  Tell me, future man, has the economy recovered yet by mid-2010?

I have an issue with this point.  The problem is that I agree with the bolded part:  everyone DOES have a PC already.  So why are you saying they'll buy one?  They've already got one.  Sure, I suppose eventually it'll die on them, but I personally know a family that used the same computer from 1998 to 2008 and only replaced it because they gave it (still working fine) to a family member who was moving out.  Not exactly a suitable upgrade cycle for PC gaming at any level (with the possible exception of browser-based games?).  This family also has consoles from every gen back to NES.

your joking right?? You realize that as time goes on quad-cores will be better untilized. Valve just upgraded their dev PCs to Core i7s because of their hardware poll.

I think the key here is "as time goes on".  Until such time as games actually use it widely, why should we get quad-core CPUs?

Because the base system supports it, Windows 7 supports quad-core processors and uses the hell out of each core evenly.

I figure, real, quad-core based games will be within the next 2 years. L4D already runs better on a Phenom X3 because it uses the extra core so we arent far off.

1) Crysis looks better than KZ2. Period. No question
2) Crysis does not and never will look as good as those screenshots.
3) Crysis isn't as good as it should be based on it's specs because the programmers for it have no idea what the hell they are doing.
4) This argument between PC gaming and console gaming is never going to end. However, console gaming is definitely more stable and more friendly to non-technically minded people.



Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

The problem is all four cores in this architecture use the same cache and contend with each other for main memory accesses through the same memory controller (along with any dma operations). This is why people pay big bucks for machines with quad-processor opterons each of which has it's own MC.

The OS has little to do with how well a application supports this kind of parallelism. Compliler and library support is where most advances in auto-parallelization come from.

the X3 is a triple core machine which is basically what the paper's I've read say is optimal given current L1 and L2 cache sizes.
