I have to admit that the first time I saw KZ2's sales that I was'nt impressed, and it seemed that others on this site also felt unimpressed.
I believe this is due to the amount of Hype the game received. KZ2 generated hype at a scale usually only seen for big 360 games such as Halo 3, Gears 2, Fable 2, and other Multiplatform games such as GTA IV, and the Call of Duty series.
Putting a game on such a high pedestal was setting it up for failure.
360's 1st Week Sales
Halo 3 - 3.8 Million
GTA IV - 3.4 Million
Gears 2 - 1.9 Million
CoD:WaW - 1.3 Million
CoD 4- 1.0 Million
Fable 2 - 1.0 Million
Gears 1 - 0.9 Million
Compare KZ2 first week to theirs and compare. Killzone 2 was setup from the start to be critized.
But if you ignore the hype and compare Killzone 2 to other great games released on the 360 then you do get a clearer view of how well its actually performing.
KZ2 in its first week managed to outsell both NFL 08 and NFL 09, Fallout 3, Bioshock, Guitar Hero 3, and it almost doubled Mass Effects 1st week.
360's 1st Week Sales
Assasin's Creed - 0.8 Million
NFL 08 - 0.7 Million
Mass Effect - 0.4 Million
Bioshock - 0.6 Million
Guitar Hero 3 - 0.7 Million
NFL 09 - 0.7 Million
Rainbow Six:Vegas 2 - 0.6 Million
Fallout 3 - 0.6 Million
That's a pretty impressive accomplishement to outperform such titles, and it really shows how well KZ2 performed in its first week.
I think PS3 fanboys have to understand that the 360 fanboys expectations are quite high, and that hyping games up will only elevate those expectations. I also think 360 fanboys (including myself) need to see past the hype and re-align sales expectations for other consoles.
Anyways, hope this clears up why I (and I think a few other here) thought that KZ2 sales didn't impress!
I've seen the light, kudos to Sony and Guerilla Games!
