I think Zelda's charm is that it's not an overly complex story, it'll probably get bashed on in 10 years time because of it, but I'll still be buying the games because it stuck to a simple story structure.

It's like, do we play Mario for the amazing plot of him yet again rescuing the princess?

Yes, we do. Or how else do you explain so many Mario games appearing on this "Top 8 best stories in videogames" list?

that's just a list you made up to screw around with us.

The problem with the whole "best story" argument is there are two ways to judge a game for that:
1) The depth of the story. In other words how well the story would compare to a good book.
2) Story integration. In other words, how well the story is told along with the gameplay.

Quite often they are mutually exclusive. Many adventure games tell a story that follows #2 very well, but is a simple story and therefore fails #1. Some JRPG's try to make a very detailed and in depth story, so it passes #1, but sacrifices game quality by making you sit around and watch what is essentially a movie, so it fails #2.

In my opinion, if you want good story, go buy a book. No matter how hard game designers/writers try, they cannot compete with a good book on story.

Sorry, we accept only credible sources like IGN and Gamespot in this forum.

I think the stories a just fine. I never really expect Nintendo to be great story tellers since I grew up knowing they were more concerned about the game opposed to the story. Also the last time they told a deep story was.... er.... Somebody want to help me on this?

There has been a Fire Emblem game almost every year for the last 4 or 5 years.

The appeal behind the story though is the characters, not the actual story itself.  The story usually plays out like the typical "save the world from a long sealed being," that doesn't exactly make for a memorable story this day in age.

So you are trying to tell me that Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn have typical/predictable plots?

Well I haven't played Radiant Dawn yet, but Path of Radiance did IMO.  I was able to see everything coming quite easily, particularly the ending.

Don't confuse "story" with "plot".

I don't think they're bad, but they just keep players interested enough.
