A non blu-ray PS3 won't happen. There are always "certified" rumours of some type or the other.

Early/mid last year it was waggle for 360 by christmas.

Before it was Hard disk for wii..blah blah blah.

A price cut, though?...It's possible but I won't bet on it.

The truth is many stores are offering PS3s (all consoles for that matter) cheaper than the usual price. In some cases quite a bit cheaper.

I bought mine online far cheaper than the RRP.

It still sold 165,000 last week so all aint that bad. Edit: 156,000.

And I confirm what you say about PS3 price, even in Italy, where resellers are always as slow a possible to cut prices, I can find easily 30€ cuts and, for units with no bundles or older ones, even 40€ cuts.
Euronics even cut 20€ the LBP bundle BEFORE Xmas, while normally in Italy you don't see discounts or clearance sales before the Epiphany, as here children receive gifts also for this holiday, and in many zones more influenced by Byzantines in the past centuries it's still a holiday almost as important as Xmas.

Can a CODEC be written to read the data off a blue-ray disc without reading movies?

That is the only way I can think of to do a non-Blue Ray PS3 (short of digital distribution which won't work with this console if you want to have more than two games).

That would be worse than the plague, but luckily it's unlikely, they'd need an individual with the right chromosomes and training him since his birth for decades to get such another oracle!   Hey, they could do a movie about a reality show growing a new Pachter since his birth without him knowing it! Or even worse they could do this reality show itself!!!

Guys, no blu ray like the xbox had no dvd... you need to buy a certain add on / remote to activate it. So it can play blu ray games, just not movies until you buy add on. Dont dismiss things that can be easily worked

 If my memory is correct you needed to buy the xbox remote to activate the DVD movie playback.

I don't see how your suggestion is going to cut cost. Taking out blu-ray playback is going to make the hardware any cheaper. After all isn't the blu-ray player still included?
