PS3 price cut announcement "in the next couple of days" - Janco

The PlayStation 3 could be about to receive a price cut, with Sony due to make an announcement imminently.

That's according to Janco Partners' Mike Hickey, who has said in his latest note to investors that Sony needs to cut USD 100 off the asking price of the luxury console.

"Recent channel checks indicate increased speculation for a PS3 price cut announcement from Sony in the next couple of days," wrote Hickey.

"We think the company needs to reduce the current price by USD 100 to effectively restart unit velocity at retail. We believe the market is expecting a PS3 price cut in April or by June at the latest," he added.

Hickey said that without a price cut, the console could stagnate on shelves, prompting publishers to move resources away from PlayStation 3 development.

"If Sony does not cut the price of their console, we expect the continuation of languishing PS3 hardware sales and the potential for publishers to accelerate their reallocation of resources away from the PS3 console."

He also said that there is talk of a PlayStation 3 unit without the Blu-ray drive, although such a console would not be compatible with the PS3 software already on the market.

"We are also hearing continued speculation that Sony is working on a non-Blu-ray PS3 console, which could enable them to make the aforementioned hardware price reduction."

Sorry if already posted

I think that a 100 USD price cut would really turn things around for Sony. Hell, I may even pick up a PS3 at that price.

once again, no blu-ray has got to be bs. Is it not going to play ps3 games?

CURRENTLY PLAYING:  Warframe, Witcher 2

I agree the no Blu Ray thing has to be a red herring.

I mean I know people say that the Xbox Arcade is gimped but a PS3 without Blu Ray isnt really possible.

The 100 USD price cut is possible however.

If you launch a ps3 with no brd...you're going to make ALOT of ps3 owners look stupid....since they have been beating that deadhorse for a while...seems like the $100 price cut will set sony DEEP DEEP DEEP into the red for gaming, and into the red for overall corporate profits as well for a while. Does anybody have a date on the new 45nm chipset...I'm sure it's not going to deliver $100 in saving...but then again...

We could all learn something from this man's writings. He never actually says "I believe the PS3 will have a price cut soon"

"Recent channel checks indicate increased speculation for a PS3 price cut announcement from Sony in the next couple of days," - Who is increasing the speculation? the ever elusive 'they' I suspect

"We think the company needs to reduce the current price by USD 100 to effectively restart unit velocity at retail." - This may be true, maybe $50 would be enough, maybe $100 would be too little. It's not relevant though

"We believe the market is expecting a PS3 price cut in April or by June at the latest," - The market anticipates it? Markets are inanimate objects and are incapable of anticipating anything

Hickey said that without a price cut, the console could stagnate on shelves, prompting publishers to move resources away from PlayStation 3 development. - Correctus. Again, irrelevant to the issue of if and when they will cut the price.

"If Sony does not cut the price of their console, we expect the continuation of languishing PS3 hardware sales and the potential for publishers to accelerate their reallocation of resources away from the PS3 console." Objection! Relevence?

"He also said that there is talk of a PlayStation 3 unit without the Blu-ray drive, although such a console would not be compatible with the PS3 software already on the market.

"We are also hearing continued speculation that Sony is working on a non-Blu-ray PS3 console, which could enable them to make the aforementioned hardware price reduction."

- Who has talked about this? High ranking Sony officials? VGChartz members? because I know that 2nd one is true

This analyst needs to grow a pair and start analysing, not just repeating what he hears on forums

It would make Sony look stupid too.

What the hell will they do with all their games on the shelves that are on Blu-Ray? refund the retailers? like hell they would.

It's like saying "I heard someone whose freinds uncle works for GM and they're working on a car with a block of wood for a fuel tank. And they're removing the engines of their future models to save costs." Rediculous.

I'll believe this price cut nonsense when I see it.

Proud Sony Rear Admiral

In regards to the non Blu-Ray PS3 rumour I call BS on this.

If Sony made a huge price cut of say $100 on PS3, Sony would generate more losses on every PS3 sold. Selling more PS3 consoles would put Sony further into the red. Shareholders are not happy the way Sony is losing money at the moment.

To offset the console losses due to price cuts the PS3 game sales would have to sell much better to make up for PS3 console losses.

Who is this guys paymaster, because it is good MS propaganda. "there will be a price cut" chap on the street says "oh i will wait", "PS3 will not have BD" chap on the street says "they don't sound like they know what they are doing, forget it". Yes, it had been posted before.

assumption is the mother of all f**k ups

Articles like this actually help stagnate sales, because they are merely based on multiple case of assumptions with no arguments at all. Your regular shopper may read this article, and decide to postpone a purchase, even though it may not even come this year.

Would be lovely if article writers wrote things based on facts, instead of on hunches and hear-say.

There is no price cut unless the company who sells that console announces it. Rumour/speculation count for nothing in the real world.
PS3 price cuts have been rumoured for over 6 months. I will only believe it if Sony officially announces it.
