Forums - Gaming - Have you ever put a "mod" chip in a console?

No, I bought mines already chipped out of the box. Funny thing is, it's cheaper to buy it chipped than to buy it unopened from an retail store

It is my understanding that it is a physical barrier rather than a lock-out chip issue for most cart-era consoles.

This means for the SNES if you break off the tabs, you can play SFC games. To play NES games, you need a pin-converter, some of which literally could be found inside of early NES games (which were nothing more than FC carts innards with 60-to-72 pin converter attached). Sometimes PAL games roll on NTSC (ATSC?) sets because of the differences in refresh standards.

Among Sega systems, the issues with Mega Drive to Genesis are similar -- physical barriers. There are no regional lockouts associated with the SMS, though a few PAL games don't work on US systems.

The issue for the older classic games was PAL rolling rather than physical barriers or regional lock outs.

During the disk-based era, Sony systems seemed to need "modification" to play games from elsewhere. Meanwhile, it was far to easy to play games on Sega systems.

The Saturn could play games from other regions with a special card inserted into the memory card slot. They were sold openly in stores, along with imported games (Literally, you could walk into a Gamestop and buy them). To play copies though, you would need to modify your console, either with a chip or to force the system to think the CD door was always closed and "swap" disks while the system was running (this worked, I did it once to prove a point, and promptly disposed of the copied game).

The Dreamcast was supposed to have more piracy protection. But people learned how to beat it. This is why there was such a post-life homebrew movement on that console. In addition, it seems that virtually any DC will boot any official game without much trouble -- regardless of region.

(Earlier CD systems like the Sega CD and 3DO do not have any real piracy protection and seem to play copies without problem).

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

My PS1, PS2, GC, Wii has mod chips in them... guess what I own zero pirated games. I do however own alot of games that are not PAL.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I used to own a Wii with a Wii-key chip installed.

A broader question would be whether or not you've had a console modded to play backups as the 360 only needs its DVD ROM's firmware flashed, a similar thing for the PSP, and flash cart(I think that's what it's called) for the DS and the PS2 had some software where you upload games onto your PS2 HDD (can't remember the name).

i had my original ps modded... but i didn't do it. my friend borrowed my ps for about a month and it came back modded. pretty weird stuff.

the funny thing about that is i still didn't buy any copied games.

i just don't like messing with my gaming gear.

I forgot to answer the question.

No -- unless you count the Saturn cartridges which were sold at retail.

(Though I did play Thrill Kill on a friend's chipped PSX once)

I modded a PS2. I would have modded my X360 also but I was afraid of the RROD.
