Forums - Nintendo - Wii is forgetting about the CASUAL gamer?!?!

Well Variety gave an interesting review to Metroid Prime 3. Apparently to tough for them... QUOTE: Too much of the time, though, "Metroid Prime 3" is more tedious than epic. This is particularly true of the boss battles, which are exhaustive affairs requiring dedication, patience, and most importantly, a familiarity with the vocabulary of videogames: double jumping, circle strafing, shooting weak points for massive damage, etc. Those who previously used the Wii only for party games will need a 13 year-old boy to explain it all. http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117934519.html?categoryid=1023&cs=1 Nintendo can't make anyone...or is it everyone...happy...jack of all trades a master of none? I dunno. Hardcore complain about the Wii being too casual...And now the casuals complaining about it being to hardcore. I just found it to be well interesting. Granted I'm not listening to Variety and I don't think any of you are either.

they dont seem to smart, specially to compare it to halo, since they are very different games.

This game is good, and its a matter of opinon, some people really like metroid, others dont. So your probably gonna have mixed reviews, but all stil high scores.

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

Sorry, i don't think the whole article says that. It does not complain, that there is a hardcore title, they saying more that this ain't gonna cut it:

The Nintendo Wii has made a name for itself by appealing to casual videogame players, but "Metroid Prime 3: Corruption" is the system's first decent title that isn't really for them. Gamers who have complained that the Wii is just for Grandma to go virtual bowling will finally find the kind of tightly constructed, flashy sci-fi adventure they love. That should generate some good will, but it will hardly draw the hardcore away from Sony and Microsoft. Ultimately, gamers looking for a well paced, thrill-a-minute shooter with a compelling narrative are going to be disappointed. "Halo" this ain't.

So basically they saying it is not a good hardcore tittle that will draw attention in the hardcore crowed, because it is no halo or a FPS but calling it one.

There reference to a thirteen year old to explain the controls basically proves you wrong.  I find it offensive, not that they think gamers are 13, that they don't do any research.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

I was checking out variety.com ... And the top right corner of their main page shows a picture of Samus and "Wii's first true adventure game is more tedious than epic." It maybe just a difference of opinion or maybe it is "too hardcore." (And yet some sites have complained that the bosses only need one run through and the upgrading is much simplier, not to mention that you start with most upgrades.)

For instance, in their article they state it is too tedious especially during boss battles. And why? Because it needs:

A. Dedication

B. Patience

C. Familiarity with vocabulary of videogames

So apparently enjoyment becomes tedious if you need to know how to play games. It's no pick up and play wii sports. So yeah I would say they are targeting the view for the casual audience, because they are a company for the general public. Hence it gets docked.

Side note but their review of Boishock states that anyone with a token of gaming expirence can get by (on easy or normal). Who know Bioshock was the new wii sports?!

So how long before games have a "hardcore" or "casual" on the box ?

It could happen.

This is why both arguments don't even make sense. Nintendo has just as much development going for both the casual and the Hardcore audience. They are making games that are extremely well suited to both of them.

I dare you to find a single article questioning weather or not Mario or Brawl will be triple A titles. Do the same for PS3 titles I will find them all over the place. Except for LBP, that one is shaping up great. I expect that one to be the first triple A.

idiots

not you guys, variety LOL

I have thought about it some more:

I wish the mainstream press or press from other genres would leave games alone in general. They suck at them, and they don't know enough about them. It would be like having an average teenager critiquing film or art.

I hate how Rolling Stone, Maxim, Variety, and all the others need to stick with what they know or higher a staff writer that knows his stuff. This two-bit game journalist are doing it just to get noticed and get a full time job.
