They are equal imo, but also don't seem to be comparable. WRPGs are pretty much Action Adventures(the real time ones anyway turnbased ones are more strategy), while JRPGs tend to be linear strategy games(this is for both Turnbased and Alot of Real Time ones). Now if you asked which was better Turn Based Rpg or Action Rpg, I would choose Turn Based RPG.
I have liked WRPGs way more lately as I haven't had played a JRPG that I have liked enough to change my mind since the SNES days. I count Ogre Battle 64 as an SRPG.
Jrpgs haven't advance in a decade. Despite the fact that plenty of jrpgs have innovated in that time, there is a general consensual that borrowing features from other games is tantamount to stealing. Thus Final Fantasy is the same contrived bullshit it was on the PSX, and games like Persona are largely overlooked.

uhhm Final Fantasy is the most appropriate game to name when it comes to "advancing". RPG has advanced in my opinion in terms of adapting into it's current generation.
I don't know what some really expect as JRPGS are in the JRPGS GENRE so don't expect something impossible. Just like FPS before are the same pew pew games today + knives and some futuristic kabooms

why can't they be friends??? (much like the consoles) Anyway they're both good, and pretty much if you asked me 15 years ago about WRPG i would have said wtf is that. Its a newer genre, and its fun, but completely different from JRPG.
CURRENTLY PLAYING: Warframe, Witcher 2

I like RPGs with a good story, awesome dialogues and deep characters, that have a good potion of free roaming/own decisions
of the extremes (linear story completion vs total free roam) I like JRPGs better
