Forums - Sony - Sony Isn't Sure About The PS3's LifeSpan - 8 to 10 years

You're right, that's all the PS3 does is play Blu-Ray movies.

All the other features say 'hi'.

Well seeing we are talking about video game consoles I assume the gaming feature is a given. As far as other features, web browsing or Home or whatever one you think is a real draw, they had better say 'HI!' as without a lot of advertising them they are not going to be known by the late gen non-gamer buyers or help late gen sales. I take it from the snarky response that your done discussing this.

So PS3 has an 8 year plan. That sounds more realistic instead of the 10 year plan.

It is users who decides a console lifespan, not Sony.

lol at people saying last place console. this gen the last place console will sell more than all 2nd place consoles. and could outsell some first place ones that is a bad arguement on that side.

Most likely cause of how weak the PS3 has been doing compared to the competition....Sony thought PS3 would come out and every PS2 owner would flock to buy one......they were DEAD WRONG.

Lol, they would have been a lot more successful with this if they hadn't taken out backwards compatibility.  I work at a Best Buy in the gaming division and I have people rethink their purchase ALL THE TIME when they find out that it's not backwards compatible.  They figure if they can't play their old games on the new system then what is keeping them to that specific brand?  Sony killed off their customer retention between the generations because they did that.

All this about backwards compatibility... If Sony did that they would have almost KILLED PS2 HW sales and with that chopping off a life line... I think it was a sound decision, to make people move over to a PS3, even if it seems it only had a marginal effect. BC would have been nice, but PS2 HW sales would have took a beating.
