Lets fix this

GoW 1 ~ Epic linear button smashing with a good story and bosses.
GoW 2 ~ Epic linear button smashing with a good story and bosses.
GoW 3 ~ Epic linear button smashing with a good story and bosses?

You can spray paint a pile of Dog Sh%t silver and put some flowers on it, but its still a pile of sh%t. GoW is nothing that hasn't been done many times over the years, its just done better than most (maybe even all depending on your opinion of the game)

Now, I love GoW, have all 3 released and will get GoW 3 probably on release day, but lets not go overboard and make it out to be the messiah of innovation.

God of War is an amazing series, but Deneidez is 100% correct in his/her observation, and if anyone says otherwise, they need to play more games (instead of flaming him/her)

By the way, for all the people that claimed Halo 3 was just Halo 2.5 HD, doesn't God of War 3 look like God of War 2 HD with wax shine?

Personally I loved Halo 3's graphics, same with the GoW III trailer as well, but let's not go claiming one thing as something when another thing is eerily similar and saying that it's another.

1) the game is not close to many hearts... #1 sold 3M and the others less and less....

2) the pictures shown would have me believe that GoW2 was better than 3..... the images of 3 are full of blur....

(I like the games though, I have all 3 ^^)

This is a classic case of placing  WAY too much importance on sales of a game.  Games of this genre,  generally don't have the replayability factor of a multi-player or anything else other than replaying different difficulty levels/ coming back months or years later to enjoy the experience again.

How many rentals of the God of War series was there?  As well as used copies bought?   I guarantee you, that a lot more people have played and beat the game than the number sold.

Since you like sales so much (Here are comparable genre games) and their respective metacritic ratings.

Ninja Gaiden (Around 1 million--- 91)  Ninja Gaiden II (0.99 Million--- 81)   Average : 86

Devil May Cry 1 (2.77 million--- 94) DMC2 (1.69 million---68) DMC3 (1.92 million---84 Average : 82

Onimusha (2.46 million--- 86) Onimusha 2 (2.14 million---84) Onimusha 3 (1.34 million---85 Average : 85

Prince of Persia (1.88 million--- 92) Warrior Within (1.40 million--- 83)  Two Thrones(0.54 million--- 85)   Average : 86.6

God of War I (3.21 million--- 94)  God of War II (2.44 million--- 93) Average : 93.5

Do we really need to degrade God of War based on sales?  It's a very, very successful and respected series for it's genre and well sold series.

Innovations? Very well.

How many hack and slash games are set in Ancient Greece?

How many games have this level of gore?

How many hack and slash games allow you to level up your weapons, and actually give you visible advantages for doing so?

How many movies allow you to tear the head off a Gorgon?

Try something for me. Go play Ninja Gaiden. Then play God of War II. You will see just how crap a hack and slash can be, and then just how incredible a hack and slash can be.

You count story and gore as innovation?

From your last sentence I can see that you value story and other lateral issues more than gameplay. Ninja Gaiden features smoother and much faster  gameplay, with better controls and virtually flawless animation. You also won't find scripted boss fights (and forget about button mashing).

Ninja Gaiden also just isn't that fun to most people.  Which is the point of games...to have fun.   God of War is clearly better than Ninja Gaiden.   Innovation is wonderful and all but only if it results in a wonderful game.

To my understanding everything he did in the trailer, you can do live. In other words, halfway through a combo you can switch weapons, you can Jump on a titan and ride it's back.. this without QTE's but playing yourself. Etc. God of war 3 will have some awesome new gameplay mechanics.

Another notion is the fact that you two are both wrong. It has RPG elements and puzzles.... plus more variated gameplay segment. .. It's not at all as simple as you make it out to be.

Uhm...

Yeah, same can be said for example about GeoW serie(Linear hide&seek shooting.) too, but anyway as long as mainstream crowd is full of graphic whores this will continue. /me shakes his head

Lets look at it this way.

Ninja gaiden is extremely hard, but hell the flying swallow can kill pretty much everything you encounter very quickly.

God of War has many different combos, sure you can mash buttons but that wont be the best way to play it.

Ninja gaiden II, I did nothing but spam whatever triangle is on the 360, i forget. I killed most baddies and groups of baddies very easily.

God of War II, Still button mashing as some people claim, but I played through some really fun puzzles.

Oh, everyone has to remember. God of War II came out near the end of the PS2 life cycle, Many people didn't buy it because they were waiting for 360/PS3. I bet God of War III Will sell over 5 million life time. Feel free to quote me on that if you want. But every single person i know that plays games loves god of war.

The wall trick worked in some places in the first Ninja Gaiden / Black, but you still have to block a lot of stuff (and of course you can't use it on many bosses).

As for NG2, you may catch one enemy with that but others will be throwing crap at you, attacking you or grabbing you. Again you can't win fights without blocking (which requires reflexes) and using movement in a smart way. The safest/easiest move I found was to jump and do a slashing attack while falling, but even this is not foolproof at all. You'd be getting explosive shurikens, they can still grab you and the dismembered enemies will still do their "kamikaze" attacks on you.

Is it just me, or does the bloom ruin those screenshots for anyone else?

And one other thing that has been glossed over in this thread. God of War is easily the best series when it comes to camera angles. All of the games mentioned above (besides God of War) had serious camera issues that were annoying as hell.
