Innovations? Very well.

How many hack and slash games are set in Ancient Greece?

How many games have this level of gore?

How many hack and slash games allow you to level up your weapons, and actually give you visible advantages for doing so?

How many movies allow you to tear the head off a Gorgon?

Try something for me. Go play Ninja Gaiden. Then play God of War II. You will see just how crap a hack and slash can be, and then just how incredible a hack and slash can be.

You count story and gore as innovation?

From your last sentence I can see that you value story and other lateral issues more than gameplay. Ninja Gaiden features smoother and much faster  gameplay, with better controls and virtually flawless animation. You also won't find scripted boss fights (and forget about button mashing).

Ninja Gaiden also just isn't that fun to most people.  Which is the point of games...to have fun.   God of War is clearly better than Ninja Gaiden.   Innovation is wonderful and all but only if it results in a wonderful game.
