Fine, you are entitled to your opinion, but have you not noticed that SE have released TLR, IU and SO4 recently, and they have all been met with average reviews (generally), and average sales (not helped by 360 exclusivity) so they are trying to do other things but failing

The big question is, will you see XIII as very good, I loved X, X-2 and XII (the only FF games that I have played), so I expect XIII to be good, and I don't mind being caught up in the hype, as I will still be hyped when I play it, and so still enjoy it even if it is average. Anyway, if they have changed the series in XIII for the better, surely you would want it to succeed? For all you know they have created another VI in XIII, so I don't think you should really want it to flop before we know how good it is

And this is another reason I hate Final Fantasy: it makes other RPG's not sell.  There are two parts to my master FFXIII bombing plan:

  1. Make FFXIII bomb to force SE to make good FF games again
  2. Make people realize there are other RPG's other than Final Fantasy.

Those games you listed weren't bad at all but they didn't sell well because they didn't have the Final Fantasy name attached to them.  I'm sure if they made it something like Final Fantasy VII: Infinite Undiscovery (that's the US Lost Oddyssey right?) and threw in a random Sephiroth cameo or even a name drop then I'm sure it would have sold millions.

Do you realize how backwards you have that?

Rather, do you realize how little it would change the sales of other RPGs if Final Fantasy suddenly went away?

How come SO4 gets "average" reviews?

DQ and KH still sell. And Tales as well, though Tales is usually really huge if it's a Team Destiny game in Japan...

Also, if FF suddenly died off, one of two things would happen:

1. The RPG genre kinda...goes boom (in a bad way) in sales. There's a chance that all those people who simply buy FF just because it's FF wouldn't buy any RPGs still if FF dropped off. Basically "No FF no buy"

2. Everybody suddenly starts clamoring for the next big RPG and that series gets a lot of fanservice, etc. just like FF, thus making you make another "Why I want [X RPG] to bomb" thread years from now.

Of course, there's always a chance the RPGs fans split up greatly and discover new series and these series end up doing well but I'm not sure how likely that is.

Meh, still sequels, I would rather those people went out and bought something like Eternal Sonata (wonders how many people in this thread actually played that game or bought it).

And I'm aware Eternal Sonata has its fair share of flaws, but all games do.

They weren't great at all, I still have had no motivation to finish IU, I instead played more Lost Odyssey because it was good, and Lost Odyssey is not Infinite Undiscovery. Square Enix did not make LO, that was made by Mistwalker, a company funded by M$ and set up by the creator of FF. They have made 3 average games, which have not sold great. LO sold well because it was good, the others have not because they were not so good (and in some cases anime hurts). They also should sell them on PS3... but that is another issue.

Last gen, games like Star Ocean 3 sold very well partially because of the huge PS2 install base, but also because they are good. Though it is not always true, most of the time good games sell, that is why Uncharted has continued to sell, because people reccomend it to other people. If you look at the sales of CoD 4 compared to the previous games, it went through the roof because it was a good game

If SE started creating good games, they would sell better. Of course new IP's do not help with many of these games, but if they were properly made they would sell better.

@ rei, it is not AAA, but I was wrong to call it average

im still betting on it being bad.
and that still wont change the fact that it will sell well.

I dont get it how the dissapearance of Final Fantasy would lead to other games in the genre starting to sell better.

According to some of you the FF series has been shit for at least 8 years already - one would think thats a plenty of time for other jRPG games to shine and get the popularity. And yet it didnt help any of them to sell better in the slightest. If anything it looks more like - the less popular FF is - the less popular the whole genre is in the West.

I would like twesterm to bomb, then instead of shitting over everything like some sort of rare species of shitting monkey he may actually put a detailed, balanced argument forward that is more than just a one sided rant that lasts a few short paragraphs.

Hey Kasz, what elements did you enjoy in the Final Fantasy games you liked?

Thank you for the really thoughtful and detailed response.

I agree with most everything you mentioned minus FF5 and FFT.  I don't like systems that make all the characters the same essentially.  That was something I didn't really like about FF7 and FF8--characters just didn't feel unique.  For FFT, I enjoyed the battle system (I love tactics-style games too), but I hated the story.  It utterly failed to interest me or give me an attachment to any character.  By comparison, I can play a Disgaea game with a very simple story but terrific writing and get attached to the characters within an hour.

I don't like systems that make characters the same either.... unless there is vast amount of variety and a decent amount of balance.

Which is the problem i had with 7,8 and even the last part of 6 as the special abilites began to efll away and their predertimed stats were washed away by esper gains.

I agree about Final Fantasy Tactics not really being engaging.  I still thought the story was ok though.  I just didn't conect with anyone in it.  Unlike the Tactics games.

Really the main character was kinda unlikeable...

I loved FF IV,V,VI,VII,VIII,IX and X. Didn't like XII, not so hyped about XIII, I don't plan on getting it, I didn't like the videos so far. Other than great visuals they don't impress me.

@ theo, it is the same battle director as X, not XII, and I think the team is mostly those who worked on X
