I don't like systems that make characters the same either.... unless there is vast amount of variety and a decent amount of balance.
Which is the problem i had with 7,8 and even the last part of 6 as the special abilites began to efll away and their predertimed stats were washed away by esper gains.
I agree about Final Fantasy Tactics not really being engaging. I still thought the story was ok though. I just didn't conect with anyone in it. Unlike the Tactics games.
Really the main character was kinda unlikeable...
