Game saves, game updates, dlc and especially installs take up space as well

Join the club. I don't know where all of my memory went either. Could be worse, though. My 20 360 had about 12 or 13 gigs left, right out of the box!

I have 2.5 GB left

Damned installs! I need to delete some of my old games. Maybe Oblivion.

how long have u had ur ps3? how many gig was it? how many games u have?

should i get killzone 2 or resistance 2? =/

Every console's free memory is less than the hard drive's capacity due to the memory that the operation system needs.

Every HD has less space on it after it is formatted.  I've got a 1TB External HD that after format had I think around 939GB.  That's just how HD's roll.  You get a little less for your buck but they (the companies) don't want you to know,  some big conspiracy to destroy the world or something.
