Forums - Sales - Units sold by each company since 1993 (graphs!)

I found this data on my comp. I had saved it there for info to later, so it's not I who had put it together. Graphs are me though, but they're crappy.

Data is hardware shipments up untill the Ps2 gen, there they start being units sold (due to the fact that otherwise 2006 would be the last year).

Also, the years aren't Jan-Dec, they're April-April. So 1998 is 1st April 1998-31st march 1999

Data is VGChartz, so it isn't super accurate.

2008 is, of course, not complete.

All numbers in millions.

Nintendo handhelds

Nintendo consoles

Sega

Sony consoles

Sony handhelds

Sony total

Microsoft

And I'll add one "overall" in a sec, but VGChartz is messing up for me right now, so I'll post it before it deletes everything.

Edit:

Added it.

Nr 1: Nintendo not split up

Nr 2: Nintendo split up

Comparison 3:

Consoles only

Suggested comparison 1: Nintendo vs Sony

Comparison 5: Nintendo handhelds vs Total Sony

Any other comparisons wanted?

Does Sony include both consoles and handhelds?

Very nice, the last graph has the legend title appearing twice, which compressed the plot.

Yeah, I'll split them up later, but I cannot access the VGChartz hardware data anymore. I think I bugged something so I'll have to reset the comp.

And Dolemit, I did that now. At least I think so. Was that what you meant?

They only have themselves to blame.

Yeah, but what's interesting is how opposite the Microsoft and Sega ones are...

MS started the year SEGA was dead (kinda), and went straight up.

In a sense, they "took" Sega's place (not like stealing it, Sega would have disappeared anyway I guess).

Its interesting, you can see that Sony's PS1 was never so popular that it obliterated N64 sales.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

The DS outsold the PS3, PS2, and PSP combined in 2005(or 6?) to now? Holy hell. :P

Nice graph comparisons, my heart fell when I saw the Sega one.. Oh well, at least their classic games are still around for me to enjoy. Also, now I only have to buy Nintendo's console and I can get Sega's games on it, so that's cheaper for me. If only Sega was still pumping out (developing) amazing games like they used to...

I do still enjoy their new games of course.

i see that microsoft dropped abruptly in 04-05 is that when the announced the xbox 360?
