PS3 won’t pass 360 for at least two years “without a price advantage,” says Pachter

Global PS3 sales will take at least two years to pass those of 360 unless Sony can bring the machine to a “price advantage” position, Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter told VG247 today.

“Without a price advantage, they will not pass Microsoft for at least two years,” the analyst said.

“I think that means that they have to be priced at the same level or below the 360 to outsell them by a substantial amount, and I don’t see that happening this year.

“I expect a price cut, but not big enough to drive an incremental 2 - 3 million unit advantage.”

Pachter was responding to a question on whether or not he thought PS3 could get passed 360 in 2009, given that Sony announced global sales of 21 million for the machine today.

“I don’t think so without a price cut,” he said. “Microsoft has been doing a great job in keeping in front of people, and I don’t really see sales slowing down.

“That means Sony would have to outsell them by around 5 million, and they are only gaining in Japan at a 1 million annual rate, are selling more slowly than Microsoft in the US, and are gaining in Europe by probably 1 million annually.”

Xbox 360’s global sales hit 25 million in November 2008.

Got it Here.

Ugh again his numbers are all wrong, I swear this guy uses an abacus ....

He estimates. That's his job. It's not his job to give people exact numbers because the people who pay for his services only want to know general trends. They could give a rat's ass what VGChartz says each week or what NPD says each month.

Anyway, I love how to him a price advantage is the same price, as if Sony only needs to be at the same level to look as attractive to consumers. Can't wait til we get to see that theory in action.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

I would like to put this guy on ignore if possible

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Wait, what happened to the importance of Bluray? Now the PS3 needs to be priced the same as the 360 or lower to catch up?

When BluRay players drop to mass market prices, and cheaper to buy than a PS3, people who buy BluRay players will buy the cheaper model.

To think Pachter is like people here, except he gets paid to voice his opinion.  Maybe there is resentment by people here that he actually gets paid to voice his opnion.

Well, in regards to what Pachter said, is he saying that the PS3 will act the 360 in a few years, if it stays the same, or happens to match the price of a 360?

Uhm... Two years? I think it will take a bit longer than that. Even if it would have 'price advantage' it would be kinda hard to sell more than 8 million in two years.

Even if it did have a price advantage it could take 2 years.

Only 2 years, I really don't think so, atleast 4 years.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I don't even think that PS3 can pass 360 this whole gen, at this rate...
