Forums - Sony - David Jaffe on Media Bias...

Jaffe will stay out of the kitchen on this one. For the record, good journalism is built around answering tough questions, biased or not. I think the questions are pointed and should be answered by someone. It's obvious Sony isn't taking any accountability on the PS3's issues at the moment, so someone might as well.

In fact, these are the question that Sony Fanboys should have answered so they can have better arguments than the current dribble that is usually put forth.

And while they are at it, they should ask Microsoft why they didn't spend the 5 cents per console to keep disks from being scratched, why did they rush out a cosole with so many technical problems such as the RROD and why does it sound like a hoover vacume cleaner. And while they are at it, they should ask them how a system at such a higher price point is at the same point it was at a year ago while releasing a year later. I don't think they will though. :P

Well we could ask sony the same thing with their ps1/2 , honestly sony just used the 3rd times the charm trick and finally made a reliable system from the start of its lifecycle.

@ SmokedHostage

Not at all, you're making things up here.

You seem to think, that I think consoles easily affordable to (or very suitable for) children is bad (or as presents from parents, etc). But it's actually quite to the contrary. I was just sharing some research data.

FYI Mario64 and Super Mario World are amongst my all-time favourites. I was advocating consumer choice, I never owned a PS2, GameCube or XBox. This generation of consoles IMO there is better and more choice available to pick the console which best suits your personal preferences (due to the differences).

PS3 vs 360 sales

Looks to me a very common mentality amongst US media.

Of course the fact remains that the PS3 outperformed the 360 considerably taking equal timeframes, despite many extra months or even years of extra headstart (and more holiday seasons) taking such a measure. And despite having been sold at a much higher entry level pricing over this period and Microsoft shooting off its most anticipated games much earlier than Sony did.

The PS3 attracted mostly adult males, the Wii attracted mostly young preteen kids as well as many casual female gamers, the 360 mostly attracted young boys. Regarding me as an adult male, Sony's decisions resulted into a more relevant and solid userbase. Yes, highly specced and multi-featured the PS3 is not as much a cheap toy for kids, but I am personally very glad the PS3 is not specced like a Wii. What would the market have gained in terms of choice if there were 2 or 3 Wii-like products? There's still the PS2, which is still a nice Wii competitor (until a slimline PS3 considerably drops in price).

IMO that's a very valid perspective the US media seems to ignore at all cost. We also saw many very biased coverage of the Blu-Ray vs HD DVD conflict (HD DVD was technically inferior in every sense as well as lacking industry support in comparison to the support there was for Blu-Ray), IMO treat the bulk of US media coverage similar to this.

How do you know this if no one on psn has a mic?

How did you come up with this?

Various studies. Use google.

no one on psn has a mic

I and many others have mics. (I have several) so, you're comment is extreme, far too absolute and incorrect.

Isn't the bolded an oxymoron?

Anyways yes although saying there isnt anyone with a mic on psn but there are so small compared to the total number of users on psn that you cant get even an idea of what the average age is.

And those "various studies" and the o so reliable holy site known as google are really great proof to get your point across.

Now the J man is going to finish his english essay and put "various studies" and "google" in his bibliography because what is more reliable than that?

I googled... I found this

http://kotaku.com/5010227/nintendo-wii-gamers-are-hardcore-gamers#viewcomments

"Seventy-nine percent of Wii gamers are male, most older than 18 with an income of $50,000 or more and more than half game for five or more hours a week"

In otherwords the primary owner and player of the Wii are the male hardcore gamers.  What happens however is that other people in the household play the system.

"About 45 percent of the other household members who play Wii are female, with 38 percent 25 or older. Sixty-five of these gamers play at least two hours a week, while only 32 percent play five or more a week."

In otherwords.  I have a Wii.... my girlfriend plays it to.... so might some other woman who lives in a house with me.  Like my mom or something.

I have a PS3.  Nobody else plays my PS3.

So... I hope you can see where your point is wrong here...

There are still many many more men of the demographics you mention playing Wii then PS3.

Number of Women is higher... but that's because the Wii destorys other systems as far as multiple person usage in one household.  Which is why the Wii is ingenious.

This is where average statistical sampling falls apart.  You ignore the fact that the population size per system is much higher on Wii then PS3 or 360.

MikeB, unless you have statistical information about the demographics of the platforms I think you shouldn't make claims about them. Anecdotal evidence goes both ways, after all every time I go shopping for games at the local big-box electronics retailer the XBox 360 and PS3 sections are always full of 13 to 15 year old boys drooling over the games.

Now back to the topic at hand, I could be wrong but I think these questions demonstrate that the journalist was trying to be balanced and it is a very (VERY) poor example of media bias. The journalist was (obviously) writing a story about the poor sales performance of the PS3 (most likely in relation to the PS2 and Wii) and has asked David Jaffe open ended questions so that he has the opportunity to provide balance for the article.

Seriously, there is easily enough data and existing quotes from executives, analysts and consumers to create a very negative article about the PS3 without ever saying anything that wasn't true, or to be accused of bending the truth to suit some biased world view. This journalist didn't do this and was actively seeking out developers who have a very positive view of Sony in an effort to give Sony supporters their say in the article.

I'm pretty sure the writer learned his lesson and will now stick to the facts ... The PS3 was released at such a high price that it alienated a large portion of existing PS2 owners, Sony has lost billions of dollars supporting the massive expense of manufacturing the PS3, the PS3 is overly complicated and (in spite of the cost) Blu-Ray and the Cell do not perform much better in real games to justify the added cost of the PS3 over the XBox 360, and the PS3's poor sales have recently gotten worse being that it is the only current generation console to display year-over-year sales declines worldwide.

PS3 fans, please try to appreciate my honesty. I am not trying to anger you. I am trying to tell you that some of the things people are saying that you believe are biased against the PS3 are based on sound concerns.

The fact that the PS3 is outperforming what the 360 sold one year ago is not a valid metric of success. The PS3 is forced to compete with the 360 right now.

An overengineered processor does little to address the present problems of game development. Games are almost always I/O or GPU bottlenecked and improving non-bottlenecked areas does little to nothing to improve the available throughput to accommodate a given game design. Those are some ugly questions. The bias is certainly oozing out of that post. Agendas? Payoffs? Shady loyalties? Personal bias, or does the bias go higher? It's mind boggling!
