I think Persona 3 and 4 have already proven that the genre isn't dead and that it can innovate. They may not have sold enough to meet your requirements, but I think they still prove what the genre is capable of and that there isn't really need to worry about stagnation in the genre as a whole.

But the Shin Megami Tensei series has always been innovative and different since the first ones that got released in the 90's and it really has done nothing at all in pushing the genre forward before so why sould it now when its still not that popular in Japan

Persona 4 sold better than both of the latest Tales of games in Japan, if that's not popular enough in Japan to change anything then I wonder why you put your hopes in Tales of Ten

TOV was on the Xbox 360 and Japan did not like TOS2 but I just get the feeling that Tales of Ten is going to sell big and is going to be the best and most innovative in the series yet.The tales series before could sell 300k to 400k in it's first week easy last gen and thats the full lifespan for all the games in the Shin Megami Tenei series except Persona 4 which has only sold 500k encluding the american sells.

Where are you getting this information that the Tales series sold 300 to 400k in it's first week in Japan?  If you are talking about worldwide fine, but no Tales game has sold those numbers in Japan alone and that's what we are talking about is popularity in Japan.

go check the numbers yourself on this site.Tales of Symphonia sold over a million worldwide, Tale of Destiny sold 700k in japan alone.Tales of Destiny 2 sold 900k in japan alone.and the rest sould around 500k to 600k except the tales in this gen and on the handhelds.go to wikipedia and find out yourself. All together the tales series has sold over 10 or 11 million copies worldwide.Believe me I know.

So if you are disregarding Persona because it is unlikely to increase in popularity, then why are you putting your faith in tales of, which isn't known for innovation? I think Persona has a better chance of becoming the popularity of Tales than Tales games have of becoming as innovative and high quality as Persona games.

I know tales does not do anything innovative that I just stated in my post that it is a bit outragous but I am going to put my faith in Tales of ten which I just get the feeling that it going to be different.I just hope that the movie for TOV that is coming out in theaters this year in Japan can get a new audiance to caught their attention on the tales series.

Persona is a great game but unlike the west Japan does not really care that must for innovative games that why Japanese developers don't try anything that new.

unless the title of the game says Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, or Pokemon on the cover somewhere....90% chance that JRPG will not sell over a million...last gen...we saw 3 "main" FF titles...3 dragon quest titles....all of the kingdom heart series....and let's forget pokemon....all those little kids buy them up anyways...

this gen....we're already into the 3rd year we have yet to see any titles from the BIG 3 JRPG....and FFXIII isn't coming out till late this year....and Kingdom Hearts...we're never going to know...and dragon quest X...who's know when...

this is just my opinion...but those BIG 3 games are affecting how people's perspective on which direction JRPG is headed....everyone thinks JRPG is doing so bad...and doing worse than last gen...but if you actually look at the numbers...they're not doing bad...it's just that not as much quantities of JRPGs are coming out as last gen....and i think that's another reason affecting people's perspective as well...quantities of released JRPG

last gen....around the 3rd year...2nd FF game was already coming out..and there were already preview of 2nd kingdom hearts game...but this gen...the first one of any of the BIG 3 has yet been released...

i think there's alot of people who are going to argue against my opinion...but like i said...this is entirely my opinion of why people think JRPG aren't as good as last gen...

with all that said and done....i dont think there really is any future growth for JRPG unless that specific JRPG game can get it's reputation/popularity up there with the BIG 3

BTW, Level 5 are known for making their JRPGs feel fresh even when they don't really do anything new.

Yes and I have mention the Big 3 in my post. But I just get the feeling that Tales Of Ten is going to be big.And with the TOV movie that is coming out in theaters in Japan this year it might boast the popularity of the tales series to a whole nother level.

Im just being hopefully.

Forgot about Level 5 but yeah Level 5 has a strong chance of moving forward the jrpg genre too.It does have alot of respect for making Dragon Quest 8 and now White Knight Chronicles

Forgot about Level 5 but to me TOV felt fresh even though it did not really do anything new

To me, any JRPG with a battle system similar to Kingdom Hearts, Tales, or Star Ocean will feel fresh to me.  Heck, any JRPG that doesn't have your basic turn based system will feel fresh to me to a certain extent.

I don't get the point of this. Both Dragon Quest IX and Final Fantasy XIII will likely be released before the next "Tales of..." game on the Wii.

Anyhoos, if RPGs need some inspiration, they can simply look Atlus' way. Their output on the PS2 and DS has been phenomenal and varied while still feeling very JRPG in nature.

DQ IX yes, FF XIII no. Especially since DQ IX was pushed back to Summer =/

Btw, one of the main devs of Tales of Ten said there was going to be some battle innovations. So I'm looking forward to a more fresh Tales game.

where did you hear that Tales Of Ten is going to have innovations at?

Just get rid of the anime-characters or at least make them tolerable and there will be more sales!
