Forums - Nintendo - Could On Rail shooters become the next big thing?

I certainly hope not, and don't think so.

Well innovation in the genre.. I thought balance board dodging from left to right and I guess use of Wii MotionPlus for different gesture based melee attacks? What about having a camera guided (I'm using this term as the whole balance board thing would make it still in your control somewhat) fighter? I don't know, the devs could figure it out if these are crap ideas :P

I can see the problem being the fact that it's not a genre with a lot of room to move and most games would seem a bit same-ish..

Maybe you could use the balance board for jumping and that jumping could lead you through multiple paths through a level.

At any rate, I like the resurgance of on-rails shooters. I never really played them in the arcades, so I missed that boat. I'm glad I got/getting a chance to play them.

You forgot the best and what may become the best selling on rails shooter of all time, Link's Crossbow Training. Wow, what an amazing game. You get a fantastic hardcore and/or party game and a gun for $20.

Wii Play also has an on rails shooter game and I think RRR does too. Let's not forget about Medal of Honor, with a on rails shooting mode. I think Terror Target was the funniest on rails shooter I ever played. You should really check it out.

For the love of God i hope not! A video game that plays itself is no bueno.

 Yep.

They used to be a big thing, especially in arcades. Games like Virtua Cop were actually quite good at the time but I'm not a huge fan of this style of gaming, it takes too much away from the depth in gameplay in the long run.
It can be fun with lightguns though!

I've updated the OP with the new news on RE: DSC. Does the announcement give further weight to the idea?

Unless they start outselling FPSs and aren't only Wii exclusive, then no.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

Only if its 1985.

Yeah that's the thing though, they'd only work on Wii and if there was a massive increase in sales the other systems would probably begin to have them with peripherals bundled in with them. However I think they'll continue to be a Wii mainstay and not really see much success on the other consoles.

I just want Starfox.
