EA explains why Dead Space Extraction is on-rails
February 18th, 2009 Posted in News, Wii, Written by Valay

With the announcement of Dead Space Extraction for Wii, the one element that may have been receiving mixed reactions is the fact that the game is on-rails. One may be wondering why EA decided to go this way. Executive producer Steve Papoutsis has explained the reasoning for their on-rails decision:

“Extraction is not your typical Rail Shooter. Our goal is to innovate and push the genre forward like Dead Space did for third-person action survival horror.

When we started designing the game we had a ton of important elements from Dead Space that we needed to retain:

1. Exciting and rewarding gameplay
2. A horrific experience set in visually stunning environments
3. Incredible mood and sound
4. A mature and thought provoking story
5. Unique, terrifying, and satisfying enemies, weapons and bosses

Creating an intimate horror experience is a central tenet for Extraction and moving to a first person perspective felt like a great fit for the Wii allowing us the ability to create the most intense experience possible on this platform.”

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

If this game is anything like House Of The Dead:Overkill, then people shouldn't worry about it being a light gun game. As long as the game isn't as short as House Of the Dead, I'll be happy.

" Rebellion Against Tyrants Is Obedience To God"

That they wanna use first person view i ok and if you look on the goals they wanna reach a good descission. But they could have made it a FPA like Metroid Prime without using on rails movement.

Steupse.

To Mr. On-Rails:

Fuck you.

What an absolute disappointment.

Yeah but no body wants "House of the Dead: dead Space Edition"  They want Dead Space third person shooter....

What a bunch of jerks.

the reviews will be what they will, the game might even get an 9.0 average, but because it's on-rail it going to miss out on a lot of sales imo.

Not to mention that there's a high probability that if this game succeeds we will be flooded with on-rails from other companies.

Maybe you missed out on what appears to be a flood of on-rail shooters.  I would almost consider this game, EA jumping onto the on-rail shooter bandwagon that is curruntly flooding the Wii.

When I saw the first person perspective and the graphics I got so excited!

If I'd known it was an on-rail shooter from the start, I wouldn't be so dissapointed.

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)
PC: 10^9
Wii: 10^8

How many on rail shooters do we have

Link's Crossbow Training
RE:UC
House of the Dead 2 & 3
House of the Dead: Overkill
Ghost Squad
Spy Games: Elevator Mission (complete trash)

So 5 games, all fairly good, and a handful of hunting games (also light gun games).

So 5, and now possibly 6 good on-rail shooters in the last 2.5 years.

FPS on Wii

Metroid (yea, I know FPA, but whatever)
Call of Duty 3
Call of Duty: World at War
Quantum of Solace
Brothers in Arms: Double Time
Medal of Honor Heroes 2
Medal of Honor Vanguard
Far Cry Vengeance
Red Steel

So 9 FPS games, with half of them being trash. There isn't a flood of rail shooters, so much as the lack of flood of FPS and TPS.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
In the past we played games. In the future we watch games. - Forest-Spirit
11/03/09 Desposit: Mod Bribery (RolStoppable)  vg$ 500.00
06/03/09 Purchase: Moderator Privilege  vg$ -50,000.00

Yeah but how many of those FPS games are worth going day one buy.... none except Metroid Prime 3 (FPA I know too)

Dead Space isn't even first person it's THIRD PERSON...  how many TPS does Wii have... one RE:4 and it's a Gamecube port!
