Microsoft in talks to buy Israel's 3DV: report

Tue Feb 17, 2009 10:05am EST

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Software giant Microsoft is in talks to buy Israel's 3DV Systems, a maker of three-dimensional video imaging, financial website TheMarker.com reported on Tuesday.

It said Microsoft would buy 3DV for $35 million. To date, 3DV, partly owned by Elron Electronic Industries has raised about $38 million in private funding.

3DV Chief Executive Zvika Klier declined to comment.

3DV Systems develops virtual reality imaging technology for digital cameras that it sells, called ZCams. Its main target is the gaming market, TheMarker.com said.

It added that Microsoft plans to use 3DV Systems' technology in its own gaming technology, such as in the Xbox 360.

------- My question is does anyone think holding a controller is ultimately more intuitive. Google for video of the CES demo. The boxing, and review by ign at the time, called it the next step up from the Wii. Alot more accurate.

Apparently Reggie said at the time that theyre not interested.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I am fine with that, as long as I can play my Halo, Fable, Gears, Call of Duty etc on a regular controller. I want casual-games to be added to the current library. I do not want the current library to be replaced.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

About having a controller vs not having a controller:

I'd personally rather have a controller. There's something about the interaction with a controller that makes it more fun for me. To be honest, I wouldn't have much fun playing Wii Sports if I didn't have the Wiimote in my hand, and it was just pure hand gestures. It just ads to the atmosphere and overall experience, imo.

Yea well i guess traditional virtual reality was a glove wasn't it. Maybe Eyetoy is the best indicator of the success of this technology.

Maybe this'll be a part of Microsoft breaking the bank? A solid core line up, perhaps announcements of new hardware whether that be just this camera system or a slim 360 and also a line of titles that target the Wii audience..

I guess we'll find out early June

I'm not interested in grasping an air in front of my tv. Wiimote is and will be superior to any such kind of (tracking) technology.

I also must say that having something in your hand is much more compelling. It gives you a link to the TV, it kind of gives you more of a feeling of being in control I guess..

This is the exact same type of statements people were making before the Wii was released in relation to a motion sensing controller and a traditional controller. And I was one of them who said it.
