Both were extreme letdowns to me from their last generation counterparts.
The difference was... OoT was still fun.

you don't recall that rumor about the next zelda's story that had to do with some kid thinking he was the hero of time and dressing like him and all that going around trying to save the world. Sounds pretty much like ff7 to me. Cloud thought he was zack and took his life over, even tried to hook up with his girlfriend.

I don't recall any rumor, and I have no idea where you got that from. Also, why do you think that sounds like FF7? A kid thinking he's the hero of time and trying to save the world is Zelda's storyline.
This will only take a moment of your time. *steals your watch*
There are actually no points to say which game is better than the other as both represent a huge step in game design.
To me FFVII represents the final nail in the coffin for N64 in terms of RPGs. This game sets the standards in game presentation(cutscenes) not able to perform on the N64's limited media format. It's a classic.
LoZ:OoT Set other standards. It showed that a great game with awesome story didn't need FMV's for it's presentation and it can all be done in-game. Excellent controls for a 3D game and it was a masterpiece.
I played and enjoyed these games. my personal vote goes to OoT and it's not strange to find it as the best game of all time in many sites

The sad thing here is that he did not even pick the best games from each series.
FFVI and Zelda: A Link to the Past are the best in the series.
ITs funny to see how ppl say these Zelda games have changed, but they really have not since the SNES game.
Its always the same story. Destroy 3 dungeons, get master sword, destroy some more, Hyrule Castles, then game over...
It's kinda hard to compare two very different games across different genres.
That said, I pick Final Fantasy 7.

That is a statement i can get behind.
Though honestly I think I may like the first Zelda more then LTTP. It's close.
LTTP was a better Zelda all around... but the free roaming can do stuff out of order aspect of the first one... and all the mysteries with the random bushes and the rocks you could bomb... that was awesome.
This is easy, FFVII. A Link to the Past is still the best Zelda game, as others have mentioned as well
Ocarina of Time.
Forest Temple still gives me chills.
