Forums - Sales - The year so far..... how long can Sony stand this?

I have to agree with MontanaHatchet, same old same old day after day, week after week, month after month.

The one thing I care about is Sony just giving up and leaving the console industry but that is something which is impossible. Software sales keep on going up which I do care about especially for first party games, that is why Uncharted 2, a new Insomniac game etc are coming.

If Sony were going to give up they would have done so know. Price drop will increase sales for that there is no doubt but Sony don't care about giving fanboys fuel, they want $$$.

Question is, does anyone think a $300 PS3 would outsell the 360?

well a £299 ps3 was more attractive to buyers than a £169 - £199 - £299 360(using uk £ to make it easier) most of last year.

but against a £129 - £169 - £279 360, its much more harder.

i would say a £229 ps3 will sell more than the 360 sku`s, but microsoft could drop the price of thier arcade to £99, i dont think they would drop the other 2 hardrive equipped models to much. mabey add extra value to them and keep them at same price whilst arcade could be dropped.

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

Then what answer do you want Kowenicki? PS3 came off a price drop late 2007 and the console sold better, another price drop and the sales for the console will increase again.

It does not require much thinking, common sense at its absolute finest. 360 was not doing as well as PS3 until a price drop came along, same will go for the PS3.

@skeeuk, the 360 can indeed go to $99 but you see the PS3 is at a point where the only reason it is not selling well is the price and the only reason the 360 is selling well is the price. The PS3 price issue will be fixed in time and all that can be done in that time is decrease bleeding with big games.

When the 360 goes to $99 the PS3 will probably be _____ but whatever the number it will be lower than the $400 price it is now so people will be more willing to go with the PS3 instead of saying "nope too expensive 360 it is".

This is a funny topic, kinda like the "Why did teh Chicken cross teh road?" of VGChartz.

I graph you the answer:

http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=PS2&reg1=All&cons2=PS3&reg2=All&cons3=X360&reg3=All&start=39747&end=39852

Note how the red + blue lines (Sony products) add up to more than the green line (MS product) pretty much every week, except for a couple over the holidays, and have for eons. Sony probably makes more $$ on each unit in the blue line than MS makes on many units in the green line, and the red line loss probably isn't very much any longer. Also note I didn't add in handhelds.

How does Target survive, when they sell way less toys than Toys R Us sells?? How do they do it?!?

Perhaps we should ask... how does MS survive? Is it some miracle? Is it the deep pockets? How do they do it??

Your analogies do not work in this discussion. The reason target makes money when selling more toys is because it is making profit on the other items it sells, unless you think Target is only a game store. The same is true of microsoft. The bulk of its business is not the game division. Now, Sony on the other hand, has other divions that lose far more money than the game division is right now. Add to that the fact that the game division is not doing well in a time when it is harder to write off losses means that the company is not doing well.

Now Playing: The Witcher (PC)

Consoles Owned: NES, SNES, N64, PS1, PS2, Wii, Xbox 360, Game Boy, DS

In all fairness I remember mid 08 the 360 is doomed threads and the beast is unleashed.
What goes round comes around.
No doubt it will swing the other way sooner or later.

MS held off on significant price cuts for a very long time.... they are now at a sweet price point and will probably cut further if they have to... because they can..

By the way...you have changed your opinion in the thread very quickly.

How so? :/

Ah reask so the 360 did also get a lot of grief before as the PS3 is doing so now, time will once again come when it goes the other way and the cycle will continue. :(

They should have dropped the price in November. Silly Sony. A price cut is needed real badly.

@ montana

Shall we just ignore and avoid sales discussions on the sales site from now on then?

No need to start getting flippant.

Montana is just asking that people stop restarting conversations that have already been explored to death.

Nothing is going to change for Sony sales-wise until a pricecut, and considering how that's only likely to come in Fall 09, I might take a break from this site because I really will get bored if the next 7 months of threads are a rerun of the last 3...

But sure isnt that why we all love this site.

I wasnt being flippant.. it was a serious question.

So you are coming back when the Sony turns its sales around.... you made my point perfectly.

And it seems you missed my point. We've had this discussion dozens of times and it always, always has the same answer. The price is too high, but Sony can't cut it without taking huge losses. Some person who thinks he's smart makes some commentary about the world economy. I die a little inside. Rinse and repeat.

It's funny though, as many times as this topic comes up, when it does, it still gets tonnes of responses that look as though they haven't read this thread let alone the previous threads. For example, people saying that they should have cut the price, when it doesn't take a brilliantly aware analyst to realize that it's not that simple.
